| Show BUREAU OF MANUFACTURES Elaborating Plans for Work on n Systematic BaslK Spealdng yesterday of the work now being done by the bureau of manufactures manu-factures Secretary Wantland said We are elaborating plans to get the work on a systematic and satisfactory basis The first thing to do is to stir up proper support for the factories we have and we do not intend to take any action that will have the effect II of making competition to kill any factory I fac-tory now established and struggling for existence We hope to get some action ac-tion by the Legislature relieving factories fac-tories from a portion of the tax burdens bur-dens under which they are now struggling strug-gling I seems tough that the men who take chances to establish a wealth producing enterprise should be punished punish-ed for such enterprises and have to pay taxes on the same basis a a man who holds vacant lands for speculative purposes pur-poses or the fellow who has his capital cap-ital secured thoroughly and escapes taxation altogether The Federated Trades are working with us heartily and we have a scheme to get up a home industry badge to be worn by all who oelieve I with us When the people see 5000 of these badges worn and hear the wearers wear-ers asking for home manufactured goods they will begin to feel that this movement means something Then we will see the merchants putting out signs that will be different from some things we now see When the women of Utah read the address we are pve paririg for them they will see the many ways they can assist us When the Press Club and the many other associations of the city take the action they will supporting the movement then the politicians will be tumbllng ten poltcans wi tumblng over themselves to take an Interest in the subject now near the hearts of the people The capitalists will think it over and conclude that possibly the I factories are in shape to offer security as good as that offered by real estate AH classes of the community pulling together can accomplish wonders and the time is ripe for this movement In Utah and the surrounding states Very few people seem to know that uniforms I uni-forms of Utah made iloth are nOw being be-ing supplied to the California and Oregon I Ore-gon state militias and that the work was secured by the Provo woolen mills against many other factories east and I west Our home policeman are now j getting home made cloth uniforms instead j in-stead of outside goods and are saving II money by so doing We nave smarted a movement by which Jie railroad I trainmen in Utah will also uniform in home made cloths and we also hope I that Wyoming members of the militia I and employes of the railroads will get I their uniforms made here I will save them money We are working with j I sheepmen who cannot sell their wool to put same into a pool and operate I the Deseret Wolen Mills That mill being closed is a reproach to Salt Lake citys people and i must be start dup d-up I the men wont do i the women i will take hold of i There is no need for all this charity business If the people will do their duty the idle people peo-ple will be put to work and money kept at home I l We are furnishing information for an Iowa syndicate who are figuring to locate a mill for the manufacture of I oat meal pearl barley rolled oats etc This will be a new industry and we I i will save a good deal of money from leaving Utah The Vraafc portion of this output would bat export The plant would probably nan an expenditure expen-diture of 50000 We arfe also figuring I for a starch factory I But the principal work to do now I now u t 0 E c c is to get the present factories running to thier full capacity and give nerve to the manufacturers who are awfully discouraged over the neglect of the people People will soon understand that tlhs movement is not a temporary matter but that it will be kept up till every man and woman in U ah will have an opportunity of hearing the truth and be requested to put themselves them-selves on record as a friend or enemy of home Industry |
