held its regular regu-lar weekly session last night with President Nelson in the chair and Messrs Dooly Young Pendleton Baldwin Bald-win Beatty Toronto Westerfield and Hansen present Alff being the only absentee I Contrary to all expectations the committee com-mittee on sites and buildings failed to j make a report on the bids received for I j the erection of the Oquirrh school and that matter will be under consideration I considera-tion by the board tonight an adjournment adjourn-ment having been taken to 7SO oclock The committee opened the bids at 4 oclock yesterday afternoon but desiredch + more time for the preparation of its report None of the figures were made public Promptly at the usual hour ptesi I mt Nelson called the board to order and after the usual preliminaries the business on the table was considered James J Phillips and Annett Burkett applied for positions as teachers The applications were referred City Recorder Backman notified the board of the city councils favorable action on the petition asking that fences in the block on which the Jack eon school Is situated be brought to proper lines The city engineer will attend to the matter William Newton submitted a proposition proposi-tion to put on marble finish on the Eleventh ward school which went to the committee on sites and buildings The committee on sites and buildings submitted a report on the heating and ventilating system of the Franklin school and < recommended that the same be accepted and the final estimate paid The report was adopted Superintendent Millspaugh submitted a statement of the present urgent need of new buildings The report recommended additional buildings for the First Second and Third precincts The report went to the committee onsite on-site and buildings The teachers and school work presents the following report and recommendations FirstAt a meeting of this commit tee which was held on Wednesday of last week it was shown that there swas I urgent need of Increasing the num ber of text books which had already been ordered to make it sufficient to j I supply the needs of a largely increased increas-ed enrollment of pupils The books with their prices are as follows 100 copies Sheldons Complete Arithmetic at 54 cents 54 001 50 copies Hydes Language Lessons Les-sons part 2 at 45 cents 22 50 50 copies Domestic Science at 65 I I cents 34 00 150 copies each part 3 and 4 Ge I ography Readers at 56 cents168 00 Making total cost of books278 50 j I As there was immediate demand for these books your committee made use of the authority which had already been conferred by the board to make the purchase and afterwards present the matter to the board the books ware accordingly ordered one week ago SecondIt is also found now to be necessary to purchase chalk for the use of the schools We accordingly recommend the purchase of twenty five gross of Alpha dustless crayon at a cost approximately of 60 cents per gross and 100 gross of enameled soft crayon at a cost approximately 13 cents per gross Third As some of the books in use in the schools are becoming loose in I their binding and unless repaired will soon be a complete loss we recommend the purchase of a pint bottle of library paste for the use of each of the schools By the use of this at a trifling expense ex-pense considerable saving will result to the board Fourth We wish also to report that our supply of copy books used in the schools is completely exhausted and we recommend the purchase of the fol lowing to supply the present need 2000 copies of Graphic series at a cost of 12782 1600 copies of the Michaels ser ies at a cost of 7980 700 copies of Appletons series lat l-at a cost of 41 76 Making a total for copy books of249 38 FifthThere are several teachers now in the service of the schools who have been employed on trial periods of one or two months and as these teachers teach-ers have taught the time prescribed for trial period satisfactorily we recommend rec-ommend that they be put on the list of permanent teachers under the usual contract with the board The list is as follows Maud Hardy 50 per month Mrs Brunton 55 per month Laura Foster 50 per month resig nation of Mrs Kelson from the Bry r ant school and to recommend as her successor Miss Harriet N Logan at a salary of 570 per month Respect fully BALDWIN Adopted Chairman J William Newman submitted a pro posal to sell a building site situated in lot 8 block 30 plat B for 5600 or ex change the same for the present Tenth ward school property and 3500 He also makes the offer of exchange of lots 7 and S block 30 plat B for the school property in the Tenth ward the old Sixteenth ward site and 4500 Re felted to the committee on sites and buildings The finance committee submitted the
