Show At the Taliernacle A fair attendance consisting princi pally of the parents of the young participants par-ticipants in the contest also of music lovers who never miss an opportunity to hear the sweet voices of Zions children in tuneful unison assembled to hear the singing contest at the tabernacle tab-ernacle last evening An appropriate preliminary to the contest was the singing of Hail Columbia Co-lumbia which the children rendered in a hearty style that aroused patriotism patriot-ism in every breast Professor Stephens said the object of the contests of which this is the second sec-ond of the series is to give the most effective lessons in singing He urged the listeners to be guided in their votes only by the respective merits of the singers He would announce the numbers but not the names of the contestants con-testants I The first of the contest pieces was a vocal duet for which there were eleven pairs of contestants some of the little singers seeming not more than live years of age The selection rendered was Let Us Clamber Oer the Hill side sideThe The second number was an organ solo America arranged as it would be for voices There were ten contestants contest-ants for honors in this selection The third contest number was Shel leys beautiful vocal solo Loves Sorrow Sor-row Sixteen fresh young voices were heard in succession and some sang with expression and pathos beyond their years j The fourth number was the chorus 1 Jerusalem the contestants being the Sixteenth ward choir under the war leadership of Alfred Petersen the Fifth ward choir led by Daniel Smith i the Eleventh ward choir H A Tuckett conductor the Nineteenth ward choir Alvin Beesley conductor Fifteenth ward choir James Morgan conductor the Twentysecond ward choir E t Beesley conductor I Cards were distributed among the audience and the numbers of the contest i I I con-test pieces were given and following each was a blank wherein the numbers jof I the most meritorious contestants might be placed The points to be i I considered were earnestness sweetness sweet-ness articulation time and voice The votes will be counted and the awards made on Sunday when the prize winners win-ners will repeat the contest numbers I The public is invited to hear the ie sulk I sultThe solos duets and chorqses were in the main excellent and the children give evidence of careful training as well as much ability I The prizes are5 for the solos 10 for the duet and 25 15 and 10 respectively respec-tively for the choruses I The JuvenileDrum corps was out in force during the evening and did some I good work for the concert |
