Show THE WORST IS P PASSED THE UNEMPLOYED WORKING MEN ADDRESSED BY GOV WEST Addresses l y lon K S Richards ExGovernor Thomas IV H Soils and Others Resolutions Adopted WorkSeckera Will Be Registered Regis-tered The mass meeting of the laboring men held at the Walker pavilion yesterday yes-terday afternoon brought out an immense im-mense crowd All was order and decorum de-corum until the matter of registering thp names of those desiring work begun I be-gun when the registrar was besieged by a multitude each man seeking to be first When Chairman Carter called the meeting to order he announced the I names of sergeantsatarms the objects ob-jects of the meeting and had the minutes min-utes pf the previous meeting read They were adopted as read The committee com-mittee on legislation reported progress J in the matter of the 2000 appropriation I appropria-tion the bill having been passed and t become a law The committee also reported re-ported hopes of the early passage of further appropriations At this junction junc-tion Governor ton CALEB W WEST appeared on the stage and was introduced intro-duced amid deafening applause He made one of his characteristic speeches I and held his audience in complete admiration ad-miration as he uttered friendly words i and kind assurances of his earnest endeavors 1 en-deavors in behalf of the laborers He thought the worst had been passed and that all indications were of the most reassuring nature for the future He was glad to see the legislature feeling feel-ing as he did The audience showed marked appreciation appre-ciation of the governors assurances and as he took his seat upon the stage the applause was terrific his last remarks re-marks being The appropriation has been approved the board organized and the engineers are surveying the grounds today to begin work HON F S RICHARDS was the next speaker and promised in the warmest words his best endeavors in behalf of the laboring class he will use his influence to get appropriations passed and let the burdens of public improvement fall upon all alike The gentleman made 8 most telling speech which was highly appreciated by his hearers He was frequently interrupted interrupt-ed by applause led EXGOVERNOR A L THOMAS was the next speaker and renewed his obligations to the toiling masses and reported progress of committee work He made a very practical talk and made way for WILLIAM H SELLS who gave some facts and figures not yet before the people His talk was well received and at its conclusion the speaker gave way to C E WANTLAND who practically demonstrated one of the evils in the matter of sending money mon-ey away instead of patronizing home institutions He told his hearers that Mr Morse the man whom the Hon Joseph L Rawlins riddled in debate in Washington was the man who made his thousands yearly off Utah people in the matter of stove polish We must not buy the Morse stove polish as he placed the people of Utah in a false attitude before the people of the world S Mr Stubbs made a short talk as did also Chairman Carter and all were well received J B Rawlings was elected registrar of the workseekers and after adopting theFOLLOWING FOLLOWING RESOLUTIONS the meeting adjqurned subject to the call of the chairman Resolved That the workingmen in mass meeting assembed do urgently request and beg of the governor and legislative assembly to at once pass a law establishing free employment bureaUs bu-reaUs thereby making null and void the present iniquitous system of private pri-vate employment offices Resolved That we the workingmen in mass meeting assembled do most respectfully and earnestly beseech the legislative assembly to at once pass the appropriations prayed for We further fur-ther desire to extend thanks to the governor and legislature for the prompt action taken in the 2000 appropriation Secretary Rawlings who will also act in the employment rigister last evening issued the following notice Registering office will be opened at the Galena block from 730 am today until all are registered J B RAWLINGS Registrar |
