Show THE SUMMER SCHOOL A Big Time at Garfield Beach Yesterday Colonel Parker Intortains a Fast and Le ight d < < I Audience General sews or Track and Train I The Provo teachers excursion to Garfield Gar-field Beach yesterday was a grand successFully I success-Fully 1303 people from Provo came In on tho morning train and to this was added about one thousand Salt Lake citizens who took advantage of this opportunity to have a good time Hon Francis W Parker principal of the Cook county normal school Chicago was the honored guest Mr Parker is one of the most prominent pedagogues in the United States and has devoted his life to the study of tho art of teaching He and his wife who 11 a teacher of tho Delsarte system of expression expres-sion in Chicago have been engaged for the past week in teaching at the summer school of Provo Mr Parker gave a very interesting discourse dis-course on the science of pedagogy yester day at the teach By way of introduction he remarked upon the industry and thrift of the people of Utah To him it seemed that industry was the foundation of all real progress To it he attributed the present moral physical and intellectual development of the people of this territory Mr Parker is a strong advocate of what he designates as practical education that is teaching by tho usa of natural objects and familiarizing the student with physical substances Ho is opposed to the methods now used in so many of our public schools where the students are obliged to commit to memory parrotlike a certain number of books rules etc and then aro graduated gradu-ated with high honors because they have successfully passed a final examination the preparation for which had not taken mows than a week of tho students time He strongly urges the physical culture to be derived from manual training and considers con-siders the gymnasium almost as essential to a good school us the study room Throughout his speech Mr Parker made frequent use of hapoy anecdotes and witty sayings and altogether it was favorably received and fully appreciated by the large crowd which had assembled to hear him Of course he was delighted with his bath and expressed himself as being highly pleased with the excursion Musio and dancing occupied the remainder of the afternoon and it was a very contented crowd which took the 4 oclock train for Provo Tho teachers upon their arrival Provo contemplated spending the evening at Cas tella Springs where a pleasant programme had been arranged for their entertainment This evening Mr Parker will lecture in the Tabernacle on a subject which should bo uppermost in the minds of all parents The Child Mrs Parker will render a discourse on Dress Reform Everybody is cordially invited Whera Is It Coins T The Rio Grande Western has a force at work grading for their new extension west from Silver City The immediate intention in-tention as given by local officials is to connect with Tintic Mills but the popular Idea Is that they intend to push on into the Deep Creek country but it is impossible to gain any verification of the report Personal and General J H Monroe general freight agent of tho Union Pacific arrived in the city yesterday yes-terday from Omaha Erustns Young auditor of the Union Pacific Omaha arrived yesterday The Union Pacific will run an excursion train to Provo on Tuesday under the auspices aus-pices of the P O S of A A round trip rate of 1 has been mado for the occasion The Union Pacific reports quite a heavy salo of tickets yesterday to Knights Templar Tem-plar for the coming conclave at Denver Seventeen cars of excursionists came in from the south yesterday destined for Garfield Gar-field Beach This Is the largest excursion of the year and was handled in a moss satisfactory sat-isfactory manner by the Union Pacific |
