"A Life in the Theater" is an affectionate look at the world of acting; David Mamet casts a sharp, comic eye on the mystery, illusion and code of behavior that are so much a part of the profession. Gradually, "A Life in the Theater" becomes more than a warm and sophisticated look at the skill of acting. Colt, who appeared in the feature film "North Dallas Forty" as a young, wholesome, whole-some, strait-laced quarterback, quarter-back, will co-star as the by-the-book detective partner of the character played by James Arness in "The James Arness Show," NBC's new police drama series starting in the fall. Colt will portray Harry Bates, a 30-year-old detective forced by his superior officer to pair off wtiii a recently reinstated police veteran (Arness), who rejoins the force to track down the slaver of a K"od friend 'Itose (iaj den' on TV A 16-year-oM confined to a psychiatric hospital struggles to free herself from her fantasies fanta-sies with the help of an understanding under-standing psychiatrist in "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden." The drama will be broadcast broad-cast for the first time on network net-work televison Sept. 2 on CBS. Acclaimed Swedish actress Bibi Andersson stars as psychiatrist psy-chiatrist Dr. Fried, and Kathleen Kath-leen Quinlan stars as Deborah Blake, the patient plagued by the dark forces of her own mind. In "Rose Garden," which is set in the mid-1950s, Deborah Blake slowly gropes toward sanity, but various incidents a manic outbreak in the ward at Christmas, the departure depar-ture of Dr. Fried on vacation precipitate breakdowns and drive the patient back toward the dismal world of physical restraint and cold packs. By the film's end, after an agonizing struggle, Deborah has taken a long step toward psychic freedom and mental health. Theater life The comedy sensation of the 1977-78 Off-Broadway season was a two-character play called "A Life in the Theater," written by David Mamet, a young playwright with an unabashed love for the theater. Adrienne Barbean Island antics Janls Paige, Adrienne Barbeau, Bill Daily and Howard How-ard Duff star in "Magic on Love Island," a comic-romantic movie about the misadventures, misadven-tures, mismatches and foibles of eight attractive, amiable vacationers at a lush tropical resort, to be rebroadcast on NBC Saturday, Sept. 5. Paige stars as Madge, caretaker care-taker of the resort, who uses her magical powers for charitable chari-table purposes. She brings together four men and four women, most of whom are seeking a relaxing vacation from their Individual problems. prob-lems.
