Show Cats Are Seeking Revenge Over Cubs but his. coach i;s have now convinced con-vinced him tc shoot more and the results were a 15 points effort in the tvin last week. THE BIGG EST point pelter of the year I las been senior Kevin Nitzel who is averaging 16.0 points p er region battle. Kevin is the most consistant shooter on tl le club and he'll need anothe r big game this week. All the Ca ts are looking to score more as four of them were in dout )le figures in the Ram win. G uard Tom Clay, who scored I 2 last week, is a fine guard w ho runs the club and his scohr ig is an added lift. Dale Christiansen and Bruce Bishop will p robably split dutv at the other starting spot and both give the Cats excellent rebounding re-bounding strength plus the two of them can score. I COACH WAYNE Baker was concerned about his club going 0-5 but they took care of that last Friday. Now the team has something they were lacking lack-ing for three games, a little thing called confidence. With West and South on the line this week the Cats have their destiny in their own hands. They have the talent and capability to beat both clubs and these players are anxious an-xious to get back into the statt tournament. SOUTH HAS a solid clun with Duran. Matt Poulson and Doug Tonge. Duran is the man to keep an eye on though, he makes things happen. Tonge is a good shooter and Poulson is an animal on the boards. Woods Cross players have been waiting for almost a month for this battle. Their wait is over. By DAVE WIG HAM WOODS CROSS Before the season started Woods Cross was mentioned as a possible pos-sible region champion. The Wildcats then fell on hard times and the ball bounced th: wrong way as they compiled a 0-3 league mark. Word then was that the Cats were out of the picture completely. LAST FRIDAY with their backs to the wall as far as postseason post-season consideration was concerned, con-cerned, the Cats came out and played the ball they are capable cap-able of playing and simply blew a very good Highland team off the floor. And they did it at the Ram's den. Now all of a sudden people are starting to talk highly again about the Wildcats. Was the Highland game a flash in the pan or are they finally getting their act together? THE ANSWER won't be long in coming as the Cats now have two battles this week which in all fairness could mean their season. First up was a stubborn West Club on Tuesday, which was played at the Panther gym where it's always al-ways hard to win. Then comes the game these guys have been waiting for, the return game with South. Everything was fine in the Wildcat fold until that opening round loss to the Cubs on Janu- ary 9. when tne oust naa settled set-tled the Cubs had a 48-46 win, which is their only win of the season in league action. Let's face it that's one ball game the Cats didn't expect or want to loose. Since that time no matter mat-ter what the players had said one could sense they were eagerly ea-gerly awaiting this return bat-tle.on bat-tle.on Friday. IN THE first meeting it was the outside shooting of Mark Duran that kept the Cubs in the game, and it was his steal and two foul shots that gave South the win. Maybe, just maybe, the Cats didn't realize how good this junior guard was but now they and everyone else in the league realizes that he's one of the best. A good outside shooter who can also go to the bucket with authority. This time around he'll get a lot more attention, last week the Vikes played a diamond and one on Duran. ONE OF the reasons the Cats lost the opener was the fact that senior Wes Johnson was in foul trouble and sat the bench much of the time. In fact, through three league games, Wes had been struggling strug-gling in the scoring department but he broke out of that last week with 24 points against Highland. Currently then, Wes is averaging right around 10 points a game for the Cats. Big Richard Johnson has also improved. Especially in confidence. Against South he . only scored two points and wasn't really looking to shoot. |
