| Show TOOl AND SHODDY Republican papers just now are saying say-ing the country is to be overrun with English shoddymade goods thisiof course in consequence of the new tariff tar-iff There is no danger of the American nerl can market being overrun with English Eng-lish shoddymade goods heretofore I has been overrun by American shoddy made goods and this in consequence of the prohibitive duty on foreign wools which made i necessary for the American Amer-ican manufacturer to substitute shoddy shod-dy in the place of the wool he would otherwise have used The effect of the tariff has been to discourage the wool en manufactures and to encourage those of shoddy To show how this has operated we will give some facts and figures from Mr J Schoenhof In 1SSO the wool used was 133033000 pounds in 1890 it was 155236030 pounds an Increase of I0141f00 pounds In j 1SSO the shoddy used was 4C773000 pounds In IS90 It was 54470000 pounds I ian i-an increase of 7007000 pounds In 1SSO j I the number of pounds of camels hair and noils used was 1141000 In 1390 it was G192000 an increase of 4751000 I pounds In 1SS9 the number of pounds 0 of mohair and foIls used was 115000 in 1890 it was 2098000 an increase of 1 I 353000 pounds In 1880 the number of I pounds of all other hair used was 4498000 in 1S90 I was 10702000 an in crease of 6204000 pounds In 1SSO the number o pounds of I I cotton used was 26501000 in 1890 It was 41040000 an increase of 14539000 pounds All other materials includ Ing yarns in 1SSO 21480000 in 1S90 i 23500000 a difference of 12020000 1 I i These figures speak for themselves i In ten years the increase in the use of I wool was something over nineteen mll lion pounds or about 15 per cent The increase in wool substitutes shoddy hair and cotton in the same period was 33000000 pounds over the 000000 pounds consumed in 1883 or about 40 per cent What has dwarfed the woolen Industry and built up to enormous proportions the shoddy industry in-dustry The toriff The facts given above ned no comment com-ment they tell their own story As Mr Schoenhof says Such facts In their brutal massive force point out a state of decadence under oppressive taxation principally taxation of raw materials far more graphically than any dissertation could |
