Show POLICE COURT A Number of Petty Offenders Before Judge Smith Yesterday Twenty alleged offenders were arraigned ar-raigned in the police court yesterday and of that number but two were convicted and sentenced six being discharged dis-charged and the cases of eleven being continued until today Thomas Butler a second hand dealer was found guilty after a lengthy trial of buying secondhand goods without keeping a proper record He was fined 10 The evidence showed that Butler had purchased some stolen stonecutters stonecut-ters tools from a sihall boy and failed to make the necessary report 11 Meakin the prospector and veteran soak was given forty days in the city jail for vagrancy The charge of gambling preferred against the ten Chinamen captured by the police on Wednesday night was not investigated yesterday a continuance continu-ance being taken to this morning at the request of tfte defense Upon the failure of the prosecuting witness to appear in court the charge against Joseph Vavan was dismissed The fellow wascharged with using abusive language toward Mrs Charles Hines Frank N Uhrland charged with keeping a vicious dog was dismissed It was a plain case of hasty judgment judg-ment Charley Chinaman a vegetable ped Idler I-dler charged with peddling without a license was given a hearing and discharged dis-charged The evidence showed conclusively con-clusively that tie Celestial had been guilty of the offense but the complaint was defective in naming the date Another complaint of the same nature was filed and the hearing will probably proba-bly be today |
