Show POLITICAL TREASON Stability and fidelity are as valuable in politics as in business and in social life A man who is a Democrat on principle Is not likely to change his party at every turn of the wind whether it blow toward prosperity orj adversity He is grounded on something some-thing higher and better than selfishness selfish-ness and that which is for the common welfare influences him much more than anything affecting him personally or his small section of country only The principles of Democracy are those of the Constitution and remain re-main and abide while various opposing parties and factions rise and fall They should be studied and mastered and when full faith is centred in them as I the political truths which lead to political po-litical salvation there will be little fear of the faltering and wavering of the disciple no matter what may happen or who may turn to the right or the leftThe The party is greater than any person per-son in it and its principles are above expedients and superior to any mistakes mis-takes that men may make who profess pro-fess them The wrongdoing of anyone any-one however prominent in the party should not be defended nor should the errors of the party be ignored But it is not wise or consistent for any true Democrat to join with the enemy in undeserved or unnecessary denunciation denuncia-tion of either To echo the calumnies and repeat the outcries of Republicans who watch for a chance to find fault is very poor policy for any Democrat to pursue And to vote for a Repubic an in order to express dissatisfaction with some man or measure of his own party is something that no true and sane Democrat would be guilty of In a recent campaign in Kansas City the Republicans were victorious and no doubt many Democrats went back on their party as some did in this city a few months ago The Times quotes a citizen of that place as giving the following fol-lowing reason for his course I have always been a Democrat and am a Democrat But I voted the entire Republican ticket the other day and will continue to do so until the Democrats in Congress learn to know their duty and perform it We have a big majority in Congress and yet the party was unable to maintain a quorum in the House for the transaction of business and the party pledges are laughed at in the Senate Until these men learn to lespect their obligations hundreds of Democrats in every community com-munity will vote with the Republicans Republic-ans That is to us the very acme of pigheaded pig-headed nonsense Yet it is no worse than voting for a Republican to a local lo-cal office here in order to show dissatisfaction dissat-isfaction with Cleveland It can have no possible effect on the objectionable thing but simply gives aid and comfort com-fort to the enemy which is political treason To go back on our friends at home to turn over the place where we live into control of our political foes because some men at the seat of government neglect their duties or we not knowing all the circumstances think they do is little short of lunacy The Democratic party is able to correct cor-rect its own evils when any are manifested man-ifested If any Democratic officer neglects ne-glects or exceeds his duty supply his place < with a more faithful and prudent Democrat But do not ever fly from the principles which ought to be supported sup-ported under every circumstance and put into power men who will fight them to the uttermost either to spite some one who has done a wrong or to correct an error which may be overcome over-come by legitimate and sensible means |
