Show A Question of Onion Breaths In School Special toTem HERALDExaminer DIapatch1 CHICAGO Dec 3The Chicago board of education edu-cation has wrestled with many abstruse problems prob-lems l but never has been called upon to decide lq questions so far reaching delicate and perplexing perplex-ing as those today brought to its attention by Mr R H Grinnell of No 220 Artesian avenue Shall pupils be received with the scent of onions on their breath Shall teachers and principals whose olfactory nerves are sensitive sensi-tive enough to discover such offendfri have authority to send them home to their parents in i disgrace These are the momentous questions ques-tions to which Papa Grinnell is clamorously demanding de-manding answer He demaads that tbe board shall establish a precedent prece-dent Monday morning Mr Grinnolla two children Angelo aged Eleven and Comfort aged ten were peremptorily sent home from the Oakley avenue branch of the Oakey school because their breath was scented with onions Miss Merrill who is credited with the possession posses-sion of a very acute nose is the teacher who exercised this authority Both children are pupils in Miss Merrills school Tuesday morning Angelo and Comfort again nartook of onions at breakfast and Skipped gayly away to school Soon they returned crestfallen with their lists in their eyes aud whimpering because the teacher sent us home auain for eating onions That night Papa iijinnell receivtd a note rom Miss Merrill Mer-rill complaining bitterly of the onion scent on the breath of his children Principal Dodge was quoted as authority for the action taken by I Miss Merrill Thereupon Papa Grinnell waxed i I wroth He has written a detailed account of the occurrence which he asks the board to take I action upon The case is causing much discussion discus-sion local educators and the public alike being I interested |
