Show AMUSEMENTS I WILLIAM TELL The Juch company had a great night at the theatre last evening Could Manager Burton have known the fine rendit on of William Tell which the company give he ought to have had it for the opening bill and the second engagement engage-ment would have amounted to an ovation like the first solely on the strength of the send on it would have received from the enthusiasm over Tell Juch had the part of the boy Tolls son tho part known as Albert in tho play Why it should be Jemmy as thoroughly unAlpino n name as plain Bill in Rossinis opera is a puzzle Though not very heavy it is a line singing character and Juchs glorious voice with her charming face and her arch youths costume made it stand abreast of Tell himself Tagliapietra was William lam Tell and a grand part he made of it His trollknown talents as an actor were fully tested in the scene where he hoots the apple from his boys head and though his voice once or twice showed evidences of hard work he thrilled his audience by the dramatic fervor or hIs singing and shared the enthusiastic recalls re-calls bestowed upon the other actors Mr Hedmont was a thorough surprise as Arnold it is the very best thing he has done both as to singing and acting and his rendition of the difil cult high notes in the male trio evoked immense im-mense applause He was last night a thorough artist Vetta was effective as ever Janus chowsky made a very good Matilda and her principal work was given with an intensity that won her a decidedly favorable place with the audience Mr Guise was good and Mr Knights tyrant Gessler was a fine conception though he is not a great singer The whole cast in fact was perfection unless we except a little tenor whose high notes Dearly wrecked the thing at the start and tho captain of the guard whose make up and mincing strides excited the merriment of the house why the captain felt it Incumbent on him to take a curtain call along with the principals prin-cipals only he can explain Tell is an opera which we hope to see again and again i we can see i as Juch does it15 overture was a source of delight in itself andthe audience gave it almost al-most an encore it is replete with beautiful numbers num-bers the little duo of 2 uch and McNichol the male trio the femaletrio to say nothing of several instances of concerted work and beautiful beauti-ful orchestration being especial instances of the true poetry of music Few companies on the road we know could grapple with the difficulties of Tell and our respect goes up several notches higher for the abilities of the charming Juch after seeing how she acquitted herself last evening even-ing Tonight Mignon and to morrow night Carmen two excellent bills OUCH CLOSE AT HAND Emma Juchs very plumb and pleasing person per-son loses none of its charm at close range During a moments chat which she accorded a HEIIALD man last evening as she sat in one of the boudoirlike dressing rooms that Manager Burton has lately been providing back oC the stage she showed a vivacity of manner man-ner and an attractiveness of face that constitute one of her chief charms She was inveigling somewhat wrathfully against tho impertinence of a certain class of journalists one of whom in an evening paper yesterday said she was the wife of Manager Locke which is about as true as it he had said she was the wife of the Sultan of Turkey Iii Ogdon she said she had been treated t another sample of tho western journalist She was bled to sing there last Monday nightin Faust When she reached Ogden she had a sore throat and though she treated herself took a gargle every hour and did all she conld to get on her feet night found her so ill that she had to go to bed in the hotel and Januschowsky had to sine her part And what do you thinki exclaimed ex-claimed the prima donna Next morning the Ogden paper said Miss Juch had enjoyed the performance from the front of the house and that a ladyMrs Marks who had sent her a basket of flowers was greatly mortified to see her in the audience when I did not stir out of bed that night and Mrs Marks flowers came to me at the hotel and were at my bedside all tho evening you can imagine something some-thing of my indignation a that newspaper fabricator fab-ricator The reporter also said Goodby Emma go to Salt Lake and show them how you can get well in twenty four hours Did you ever here anything like Itt and the pretty prima donna clinched her list in a manner that boded no good to the Ogden man had he been present Miss Juch said they had had immense success everywhere in the west and northwest they had a decided testimonial on their opening night in Los Angeles where the audience remained seated till 1045 waiting for the train to get in The performance of Faust was given at that late hour and out of a jammed audience not twenty left before the show was over Next season Miss Juch said they expected ex-pected to branch out into Wagner and Salt Lake would in all probability her in Logen grin and The Flying Dutchman |
