Show FAST PRESSES We wonder if the limit of speed possibilities possi-bilities in printing presses will ever breached b-reached It isnt so long ago that 500 newspapers an hour was considered a great achievement In the early days of THE HERALD it had a press which turned out 1000 impressions an hour that is to say it i printed one side or two pages of a four page paper at tho rate indicated and people peo-ple thought it was a swiftworking machine I ma-chine The press on which THE HERALD is now printed turns out 12000 eightpago papers an hour and does not make half the noise and fuss about the work that used to characterize the old Railroad Hoc which insisted upon keeping the neighborhood disturbed from 11 p m until sunrise Now comes tho announcement that the New York HERALD has given an order for a press that will print 90000 four or six page papers an hour which is at the rate of 1500 copies per minute or at the rate of 25 per second 70000 eightpage papers per hour 46009 ten or twelve page papers 30000 sixteenpage papers or 24000 twen tyfour page papers per hour All of these papers will be delivered from tho machine complete cut pasted and folded When completed this will be tho fastest printing press in the world but it will not long retain re-tain the proud distinction Some other publisher will demand a swifter machine and the builders will undertake to go the HERALDS press 10000 an hour better constructing con-structing a press that will deliver 100000 complete papers in sixty minutes Tho limit however must be reached but when |
