Show The Silver Bill Debate Opens WASHINGTON D C May 7Special telegram tele-gram to THE HERALD The debate on the sil ver bill was begun rather unexpectedly this afternoon The Republicans had intended to call it up and then postpone it to Tuesday while whie the bills admitting Wyoming and Idaho were pressed a conclusion In view of the purpose of the Democractlc Senators to debate the admission ad-mission bills at length the silver bill would hardly have been reached by Tuesday and It was this perhaps which led them to insist upon its immediate consideration Senator Jones of Nevada who is in charge of the bill has gone to New York with the expectation that i would not come up until the time agreed upon and his colleague Senator Stewart was a good deal surprised when his motion for de lay under unanimous consent was defeated by an objection by Senator Vest of Missouri The Missouri Senator said the bill had bean delayed so long and was of such importance im-portance that he did not feel that i ought to be longer delayed and that other Senators shared this feeling with him Senator Vest refused to withdraw his objection and the debate began in a rather informal manner The Republican Senator evidently were not eager for the de bate and after offering some amendments the debating was then cut off for further considera tion of the silver bill by voting to into utive session bi votng go exec |
