| Show A SUDDEN DEATH Col Ovando J bluster Passes Away From Heart Disease The Sad Event Occurred Yesterday MornIng Brief Sketch or an Actlvs and Useful Career The entire community was shocked yesterday yes-terday morning when the news of the sudden sud-den and wholly unexpected death of Colonel O J Holster spread over the city The deceased was an unusually robust man but had not enjoyed his usual perfect health for a few days past although able I to be about and attend to business I seems that he awoke a about oclock yesterday yes-terday morning and stated to his wife that ho felt quite sick but the serious nature of his illness was not suspected He gradually grad-ually grew worse however and although everything done for him he passed away at about 5 oclock Colonel Hollistor was a man of great force of character and his ability extended in many directions Born in Massachusetts 1S33 he received a liberal education and when a young man spent several years in New York II He came west in the early days and when the mining excitement took thousands to Colorado he joined the throng bound for Pikes peak and settled in the town of Central Here he established a newspaper which he conducted con-ducted and also engaged in mining and and he also took an active interest in politics tics During the war of the rebellion ho enlisted and went to Now Mexico where ha did some active service At tne close of the war he returned to Colorado and afterwards married a halfsinter of Vice President Coif ax Ho came to Utah oval twenty years ago as collector of internal revennes ana has resided here ever since During all that time he has been A CONSPICUOUS FIGURE and was active in political religious and business affairs A Republican in national natio-nal politics he allied himself with the Liberal party and was a prominent member mem-ber of it almost from its formation Aside from his position under government he never held office here nor did ho seek I political preferment He was one of the original members of the Congregational society and the present prosperous condition condi-tion of that church is largely duo to his efforts ef-forts He took an active interest educational educa-tional affairs also and was one of the trustees of Salt Lake academy He succeeded suc-ceeded M J Forhan as secretary of the chamber of commerce and did yeoman service ser-vice in bringing the boundless resources of this territory to the attention of the world His duties while filling this position brought him in close contact with the business busi-ness men of Utah and his ability and fidelity fidel-ity won for him THE RESPECT OF ALL who knew him He was interested in many mining enterprises and was a stockholder stock-holder in the Tribune At the time of bis death he held the office of deputy collector of internal revenues for the district of Montana which embraced that state Utah and Idaho A fow years ago he wrote a life of Colfnx which was published taj Funk Wanpalls ew York and tri o uooic nail a ucavy sate TTa usa been a contributor to the columns of the Tribune for years and lately his contributions contribu-tions took the form of llIVTotes of an Observer Ob-server and they formed an attractive feature feat-ure of the paper From the above brief sketch it will be seen that the deceased had a busy active and useful life and there is not one stain on his long career Although his rugged sincerity may have occasionally offended k was always admired His life both public pub-lic and private was above reproach and the warmest tribute that can be paid him is the fact that those who know and Understood un-derstood him best loved and admired him most The arrangements for the funeral haye been left in the hands of George A Lowe and although the time has not yet been definitely fixed it is understood that the aorviccB will bo held on Monday next |
