| Show A W Tkurman to Ohios Democracy Specialto THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch COLUMBUS Ohio Fob 12Allen W Thurman son of Ohols honored Old Roman publishes an open lotter to the Democratic party of Ohio I bears evidences evi-dences fcf closo consultation with the elder Thurman While it is prudent in language and conservative in tone it is considered as notice served upon Senator Brice John R McLean and others that they must not attempt to raid Ohio In favor of j THE HERO OF Tnt MIDWINTER CONVENTION i Reading between the lines there is found a suggestion in favor of exGoverno II Campbell Concerning the rights of a majority ma-jority and minority there is also found a strong thrust at tho February 22 movement move-ment an intolerant and oppressive Hero are porto s of the letter The Democracy of the state of Ohio has not for many years filled the place which justly belongs ti it in the field of national politics Polling the third largest Democratic Demo-cratic vote among the states it has failed to impress itself on the policy of the party in the naming of those who have been elected as national standard bearers In torritory enough to comprise an empire and with I population sufficiently numerous numer-ous t constitute an independent commonwealth common-wealth the state In the Democratic councils has been AX INSIGNIFICANT FACTOR I and the influence of its Democratic element ele-ment is usually found playing around zero This should not ha so and would not bo if the party had a clear conception of its power and its opportunities Factional interests i have contributed largely to bring about this important con lLon What is needed is the application ot the rule of the majority major-ity I 1 entirely proper that men should be ambitious and that they ehould exert themselves to the utmost to attain the object ob-ject j of their ambition But it is inexcusable inexcusa-ble for ambitious and designing men failing fail-ing in their intents to still cling to their aims when thoy must recognize the fact that their action only leads to tbe demoralization demoraliza-tion and weakening of their party as a whole In THE COMING PRESIDENTIAL CONTEST our Democracy should have its lull weight in the making of the presidential nominees nomi-nees in the discussion and settlement of principles involved in the platform There i but one way t accomplish these desira ble results and that is by the state convention conven-tion adopting a resolution instructing the delegation to vote on all matters as a unit his not necessary to Instruct for whom or what the delegation should vote but it is essential that when the voice of the state is uttered it should be forty fix for or against tit proposition Let i be clearly understood we do not advise that the state contention should Instruct on tho presidential question for unless the convention con-vention decided we had some favorite on whose virtues worth and availability strongly commended his nomination to tho country and would at the same time solidify the state it woula be manifestly unwise to express I preierence it may be eald that I IT IS W110NG TO SUPHESS A 1I1MOUITT This is true when a majority wilfully and without any justice becomes intolerant and oppressive using its force without other consideration But thera Is always a minority mi-nority to every proposition and the rule of Democracy is that tho majority fairly obtained ob-tained and fairly uttered must be obeyed I this were not so there would soon be an end to all rue The effect too of this unity of action on the part of the Democracy Demo-cracy will not be confined to the deliberations deliber-ations of the convention but will bring good results after the party has been successful suc-cessful at the polls UNITY UESTBOYS SCHISM and when the Democracy triumphs in the national contest the party in Ohio will not bo rent by factions each endeavoring to discredit the other and in the end none or a very small portion of any faction participating parti-cipating in the fruits of tho victory The acqulejence of the minority welds all the elements and presents to an incoming administration ad-ministration that which commands respect but its full share of honors and emoluments emolu-ments which are at tho disposal of the President The gallant fights that have been made by the Ohio Democracy certainly cer-tainly entitle them to their due share in them but heretofore on account of our lack of unity and fierce contention of oppos ing interests intrests THE DEMOCRATS OB OHIO have secured but meagre recognition for the reason that the appointing power has always been unable to decide between the merits of the applicants to bitterly have their merits and demerits been canvassed But with the party a unit these disturbances disturb-ances removed the full share of patronage patron-age will be given to the state Let all of us join to correct the evil of the past that we may not only strengthen the party in other states but that wo may reap tho advantages ad-vantages which accompany intelligence and patriotic party management ALLEN W THUEIIAX |
