| Show PUKIFICATION FIRE Exorclsinc the Influence of an Evil Eye by Tour Women in Scotland Special to THE HERALD Examiner Cable LONDON April 10A curious story comes from Scotland Rev Dr Stewart received a letter from a friend in WIgtonshIre that seeing see-ing a smoke arising from a hollow he started to investigate He saw five women passinga sick child through a fire Two of the women standIng stand-Ing opposite to each other held blazing hoop vertically between them and the two others standing on the other side of the hoop were engaged in passing the child backwards and forwards for-wards through the opening of the hoop The fifth woman who was the mother of the child stood at a little distance earnestly looking After the child had been passed and repassed eighteen times through the fiery circle it was returned to its mother and the burning hoop thrown into a pool of water The child which is about eighteen months old was a weakling and was supposed to have come under the baneful influenced an evil eye The hoop was twisted round with straw rope In which a few drops of oil wero scattered to make it burn all round at the same time When the child was taken home a bunch of bog myrtle was suspended sus-pended over its head Rev Stewart said he had also received letters from towns in southwest south-west Scotland which showed the people there were still very superstitious |
