examination of Mrs Precilla Charles md Henry Schrooder on the charge of adultery was held before Commissioner Greenman yesterday morning and the case presented a very peculiar state of facts The complaining witness was Robert Charles a young laborer who has resided i this territory about ten years Two years ago he he married a girl at Mill creek and they have had two children both of whom are dead Mr Charles testified that until about six weeks ago he had lived happily hap-pily with his wife At that time SChroeder came to board with them at Ogden Charles says his wife took a fancy to him and tired of her lego lord Three weeks ago Mr the and Mrs Charles came to Salt Duke and husband paid Schroeders passage from Ogden and he boarded with them here On the 10th of July they had to leave the place where they were lodging and Schroeder rented a room which Mr and Mrs Charles occupied It was at this place Charles says that ho came home on the aCternoon of the 20th and found his wife and Schroeder in a compromising position po-sition Mrs Charles emphatically denied that she had any affection for Schroeder and in relation to the occurrence on Jnly 30 she said she was in the room with her husband when Schroeder called He had boarded with them till the day before Charles asked his wife to go out with him and get supper but sue laid she did not feel well enough and would not eat anything Then ne got angr and went off After a while he came back and walked into the room She was sitting where she was when ho vent out on the foot of the bed Schroedor wa on n chair near the door She emphatically emphat-ically defiled that there had been any improper im-proper relations between them or anything suggestive of wrongdoing She said that it was at her request that Schroeder rented the room and she had asked him to do so with the money he owed for board and at the urgent direction of her husband whoa who-a out of money She never wanted Schroeder to come and board with them but her husband had brought him there against her wish Sho declared that during the two years of their married life Charles bad only done about six weeks work She had earned the money which enabled them to live Whenever he got money he would spend it in drink On several occasions when hb had been arrested for being drunk she had taken her earnings and paid his line This statement is corroborated by her t take up a life of shame to support him but she refused She said he had treated her shamefully but she had clung to him He had finally sold the little furniture fur-niture they had and had spent half the money in saloons When they were turned out of their last longing place she refused along to go to the room rented for her till he came Mr Schroeders story is that he i a married man and his wife and one child I are at Colorado Springs He and his wife quarreled about ns motherinlaw and he came t Ogden and got work Ho became acquainted with Bob Charles who said that he and his wife were in poor circumstances circum-stances and urged Schroeder to come and board with them as it would help them out This he did paying 5 per week When they came to Salt Lake Charles persuaded per-suaded him t come along and oven loaned him money to pay his fare This Charles admits When Mr and Mrs Charles were turned out of their lodging house he owed them some money and Mrs Charles bad asked him to pay their room rent with it i they could find a room She said her husband had directed her to make the request I re-quest or she would not have done it i Schroeder den = ed any improper relations and agreed with Mrs Charles in saying that the husbands story was intended t I destroy his wife because she was unable to longer earn their living I Commissioner Greenman said that he thought the case was one which should be investigated and held the defendants to await tho action of the grand jury fixing their bonds at 1500 each Cuarles offered to get sureties for his wife but she indignantly indig-nantly declined his offer stating that he was falsely accusing her They were committed com-mitted bail t the penitentiary in default of For Assaulting His Sweetheart Yesterday afternoon a young man named Alfred nay was tried before Commissioner Greenman on the charge of assaulting Miss Rose Turner Mr Stroup defending and Dr Eldridge prosecuting The evi dence showed that until recently Ray was keeping company with Miss Turner but as his manner of living did not please his sweetheart she threw him over Since then lie has felt very bitter against the young lady and on Saturday last he met
