Show THE D1FFKHEXCE In all parties perhaps thtro are men o f almost all gradations of good and bad I Apart from merely personal matters how evtr there is one important difference between be-tween the Mormons and the nonMormons of Utah The former havn never attempted r at-tempted to interfere with the political rights of nonMormons in Utah on account of beief disbelief or anything else Non Mormons have never been denied the rights of American citizens in Utah at dIn d-in all the since the years they organized apart a-part they have cast their votes without molestation and without even a suspicion of danger No sooner however had the Liberal party acquired strength than it began agitating for the franchise for the women of Utah which was soon granted by the territorial terri-torial legislature At once the Liberal party perceived its mistake it did not desire de-sire the elective franchise for women but It did desire to talk about the downtrodden women of Utah Nothing was left however how-ever but to demand the disfranchisement of the women which was finally secured L Next the punishment of actual polygamists was demanded and secured and then it was demanded that theoretical polygamists be disfranchised A test oath was Incorporated Incor-porated in the antipolygamy laws disfranchising disfran-chising all who would not premIse to obey thelawin the future But asit was apparent appar-ent that the great majority of the Mormons would never have broken tho law anyway any-way and would have EO special objections to taking the test oath the Liberal leaders got together and made a sew oath different from the one proscribed pro-scribed by Congress and one that it seemed the Mormons could not take and actually tried to forco this new oath upon the Utah commission in order atcnce to disfranchise the majority here Baffled in this they secured complete control con-trol of tho election machinery and proceeded pro-ceeded to disfranchise their opponents by striking their names from the registration list This method has proved tedious and again goes the united voice of tho lawbreaking law-breaking minority to Congress for the complete disfranchisement of the law abiding majority Longcontinued Illtreatment has made < the people of Utah measurably j i patient and forbearing Nevertheless j j 1 they chafe to hear the party that lllls the jails and occupies the courts that keeps the saloons and gambling shops that J introduced the gilded dens of vice con i antly clamoring for the disfrancli cment I I of the more peaceful and virtuous ujcm hers of the dominant party in Utah Tbo Liberal party makes the claim that Mormons should be disfranchised because some of them havo violated the law and the Mormons are naturally indignant tbat the patty which furnishes ten times more crIminals than can be found among Mormon Mor-mon church members and criminals of the basel sort at that should make such a demand de-mand or should pretend to a virtue and loy 1ltj superior to that of the M rmons Judged by actions and we know of no other fair criterion the average Mormon Mor-mon Is far superior as n citizen to the aver ago advocate of his raucnisemcnt Yet it passes loran argument to say that the belIef of a lawabiding Mormon is so injurious injuri-ous to the nation that he should be dis ranchised while those whose actions are on an average much worse than those of the I Mormon need not be tnus dealt with because be-cause their belief thought to be satisfactory tory oryThe The grand difference therefore between the two parties in Utah the one comprehending compre-hending most of the professed Mormons the other compre ending most of the non Mormons is that tho former has not sought to restrict tho rights of people for any fuse whatever while the latter has se cured the destruction of jury trial in the true sense the disfranchisement of women and is now seeking to secure tho disfran hisejient of all its opponents on the ground of belief I |
