Show The Robbers Got Very Little CHICAGO Nov 12General Manager Earling of the St Paul railway received a dispatch this morning saying the robbers did not get any booty from the expres car held up near Western Union junction this morning The dispatch said the robbers after gaining admission to the express car commanded the messenger to open the afes Ho refused and the safes were pitched out of the car onto on-to the ground In the meantime he rear brakeman understanding the situation situ-ation rushed back to the junction and got an a engine The engine and posse at once I vent to the scene and therobbers tied I The robbers had tried to force open the doors of the safe but were unsuccessful The train went on to Milwaukee and the fast mail train which left Chicago later PICKED UP THE SAFES a carried them to Milwaukee The po lice l of Milwaukee and the secret service of tho St Paul system together with the sheriff of Racine county are in pursuit of the robbers Their flight was so hasty they did not take the precautions to cover their track so the officials believe they willet g will-et them be for a noon today Express Messenger Murphy reported at headquarters of the American Express company here and gave an account of his o experience He detailed the facts as given in i a previous interview adding that a num ber of shots were fired Three robbers after gaining entrance demanded and got the keys to the safe AT THE MUZZLES OF THEIR GUNS The engineer was compelled to force open the local safe containing money and valuables consigned from Chicago for points between Chicago and La Crosso As the through safes had combination locks the robbers were unable to get into them The robbers then compelled the trainmen to assist in throwing their treasure treas-ure boxes from the car and the fireman messenger and his helper were ordered to leave the car followed by three robbers with rifles leveled upon them The four trainmen were compelled to walk about a quarter of a mile up the track In the meantime the locomotive headlight had been extinguished The robbers then sent the engineer and firemen into the cab and OUDHRED THE TRAIN TO PULLOUT The way safe contained between two and three thousand dollars and way bills which wero taken and probably destroyed When the train arrived at Frankville a telegram was sent to Western Union Junction and a posse sent to the scone |
