| Show PACIFIC SHORT LINE The Mystery Surrounding It ft Finally Solved IT WAS A UNION PACIFIC SCHEME flow the Debt to the Government Was to ba Paid BnlHss Goes to New York Charged with Arson Sioux CITT Iowa Aug 27Special telegram to THE HEKMD A special from Chicago says The Pacific Short Line was o iginally a scheme of the Union Pacific to connect it with their lines over which the government has no control and then turnover turn-over the subsidized lines to the government govern-ment The subsidized lines are the mainlines main-lines from Council Bluffs to Ogdeiuand the old Kansas Pacific from Kansas City to Denver and Cheyenne The scheme fell through and the Manhattan Trust company com-pany which bad charge of it for the Union Pacific now thinks there is a big thing in it to sell out to some company needing a trans Missouri connection This was conceived by thin alliance of the Union Pacific with the Northwestern thus shutting out all eastern roads from Union Pacific traffic The Rock Island and the Burlington Missouri Pacific have Denver connections and with the Southern Pacific by way of the Rio Grande to Ogden the Milwaukee is frozen out at the Missouri river President Roswell Miller of the Milwaukee is now in Now York negotiating with the Manhattan Manhat-tan Trust company for the road The latter lat-ter company is also contemplating operating operat-ing the Short Line independently with the Southern Pacific at Ogden the Illinois Illin-ois Central and Chicago Milwaukee iS St Paul and Hock Island at Sioux City The Great Northern and Union Pacific are also trying to secure control President Miller of the Milwaukee has secured se-cured the refusal of the road if sold and therefore it is almost a sure thing that it will be completed either by the Manhattan Trust company or the Milwaukee road Thus the veil has been lifted from the mysterious mys-terious road |
