place else Today they nominated nomi-nated one of the strongest men in either party for Congressman W W Dixon of Butte The name of no other candidate was presented and when in the convention he was formally nominated by Judge De Wolfe of Butte every one of the other i fifteen counties in the state seconded tho nomination most heartily and his acceptance accept-ance called forth the heartiest enthusiasm I j ever seen in a Montana convention Dixon is the leading lawyer of the state residing at Butte and thu counsel I of J B Haggin and Marcus Daly His residence dates from 1SGG Personally be L popular and there is not one word I that can be said against his character or ability Ho is the strongest man in the Democratic party Marcus Daly was selectel chairman of the stat central committee The platform adopted makes the issues upon silver legislation tariff reduction in accordance with northwestern interests and the Lkck Republican frauds of the celebrated Precinct 34 where the Republicans Republi-cans won the state by the most questionable question-able methods These three issues are the all important ones and are subjects dear to the western heart To night a large meeting was held here and others are in progress in western Montana Dixon and the legislature are the watchwords and upon a thousand lapels la-pels a ribbon is worn with these words above a picture of the 15fSpecial telegram t THE HERALD The September term of the First district court convened this morning Judge J W Blackburn on the bench There were present the officers of the court and attorneys at the bar The venire for grand jurors was lead and the following grand jurors empanelled no objections ob-jections being made by the bar Jonn W Moorcbouse James M Ballinger Alexander Ellis George Chambers B C Peterson Jappa Nilson N L Acord Thomas Howell Joseph Wilkinson J C Warfield R Christensen Thomas Burt Peter Schwab Thomas Dallin and William C Penny Henry McKcnny was excused from service ser-vice as his business affairs required personal per-sonal attention John W Moorehouse was appointed foreman His honor instructed the jury as usual in relation to the offenses against the United States and the territorial laws calling especial attention to bigam pol gamy and unlawful coliabi < tailOR These crimes are heinous It Is p a mistake to say that the prosecution of these offenses is persecution The practice of gambling and the illegal sale of intoxicating liquors was also made especial mention of and the jury wcr instructed in-structed to make diligent inquiries into the violating of the law TIE HERALD Another kijlingis recorded at Cheyenne agency This time its Indians instead of whites At the inquest in-quest held on the remains of Hugh Boyle Thursday American Horse the Cheyenne brave testified to the fact of Head Chief I another Cheyenne telling him on Saturday Satur-day that he and Young Mule had killed tat 11ule ldled a white man When the body was found these two were absent which satisfied the L jury they were guilty and a verdict in accordance was at once rendered Since then the Indian police twentyfive in num I ber have been out looking for them and today n telegram was received here by the sheriff from Captain Arnold commanding at Fort Ouster that the Indian police and troops had surrounded and killed Head Chief and Young Mule yesterday The same information comes from Agent Cooper in charge of the Choyennes The report is received with much satis fact on here as it evinces a willingness one h on-e part of the triolo t punish individuals guilty of crimes The Cheyennes have many young men who have grown up since the tribe has been at peace It is these I who make tho trouble as they are anxious to distinguish themselves The old men I discourage them but Supposed lurder Near Glcnwood Springs GrnxwooD SPRINGS Sept 15Special I telegram to Tin HEHALPJ Information has been received here of the supposed < murder of Tohn Wist ranchman residing I twentythree miles from llangeley at the I mouth of Yellowc reek He has not been seen around his claim for several days and the neighbors suspecting foul play made a search They found his horse saddled and ridled and an alarm was given Thirty fi ve cowboys engaged in a roundup hunted je country over but discovered nothing The party then examined his cabin and L iscovered unmistakable evidence of a eathly struggle An empty revolver was hanging upon the wall with I I lood clots on it blood stains were i o n other places in the room and the racks of two men discovered and followed L I a long distance to White Whit river with bloody r marks where some heavy body had been ested All lead to Portion river where t hero are deep pools and it is supposed the body was thrown there weighted down with rocks A halfbreed recently released from Carton City and who is now supposed sup-posed to bo on the Ute reservation in Utah i s suspected besides one man whose loca ton is known and who is closely watched viiile efforts are being made to secure fur her evidence Threats are made to lynch the suspected man and the halfbreed also if he can be caught Terrible Accident on the Montana Union BUTTE Mont Sept 15fSpecial telegram i tele-gram t THE HERALD A terrible acciden L t occurred on the Montana Union road nea this city at a late hour last night whic resulted in the instant death of the engineer en-gineer and probably the fatal injury of the foreman of the crew The Union has aLe switch running to all the mines upon th a-Le mountain back of this city reaching the very summit As the switch engine was coming down past the Moulten mine las night hauling three cars of wood the engine en-gine refused to obey the brakes In a moment i was beyond control and at the switch left the track and plunged into the huge smokestack of the Moulten min That immense pile of bricks 65 feet in height and 15 feet square at the base was cut off at the foundation as though struck by a cycloneand brickswere poured upon the engine in regular avalanche Engine Hatter was found crushed almost out of i human semblance but with his hand sti ill on the throttle Fireman Springer cawled out from under the wreck without a scratch When the engine left the track the coupling broke and the three cars followe the rails until they landed in the wreck 6f the smokestack Here Foreman Fitzgerald was found pinned down so tightly that a hydraulic jack was necessar to remove him He was still breathing bu unconcious and has remained so to this hour with the chances for his recover infinitesimal All the remainder of tie crew escaped The damage done cannot fall far short of 20000 and it will take ten days torepair 1t |
