Show HOAR SPET SCHEME The Infamous Election Bill I Shelved < SENATOR STEWART DOES IT He Mates a Motion to Take Up the Financial Bill Which Carried Shermans Anti Silver Speech WASHINGTON Jan 5 Special telegram tele-gram to TIE IiE1ALDI telegraphed you some days ago that the Republican silver Senators were growing impatient and that they would not much longer delay action upon some measure looking t free coinage They took this action today I came unexpectedly un-expectedly and it was for this reason all L a the more irritating to their gold bug Republican associates Senator George was speaking against the force bill when Stewart of Nevada with Georges consent made a motion t lay aside the partisan measure and take up his free silver bill The motion was carried by a vote of 34 toG to-G I was a dreadful blow to Grandpappy Hoar and other radical leaders who dislike dis-like silverlegislation quite as cordially as they favor the force bilL The course taken by the Idaho Senators was especially gall ing to Mr Hoar He has yearned for their jrescnce a a distracted mother might yearn for her lost babe He felt that their presence would by increasing the Republican majority aid materially to the prospect of passing the force bill For this reason he urged the committee on privileges and elections to take speedy and favorable action upon the credentials of 2SIr McDonnell which was done this morning and whereby Mr McConnell was cnabled to take his seat He had not been seated an hour when the vote was taken on laying aside 11 Hoars pet measure and to his great disgust both his political pro teges as he regards the Senators from Idaho voted against him He regards their action as the basest political ingratitude ingrati-tude and you may be sure he will not soon forget it The shelving of the force bill is probably the last that will be hoard of the iniquitous iniqui-tous measure for the rest of the session The debate on the silver bill last sier bi may a week and it may last a month Senator Teller of Colorado tells mc that Stewarts free coinage bill will probably pass by a majority of fifteen |
