Show CHAIR OF GEOLOGY AND MINING By act of the legislative assembly of Utah passed at the twenty inth session and approved by the governor in Match 890 the chair of geology and mineralogy was established in the University of Des eret Chapter 53 of the laws of Utah contains con-tains the act establishing and defining the aforesaid chair In section 3 of the chapter tao objects are set forth in tho following words The object of the creation of said chair shall be FirstThe delivery under the direction of the chancellor and board of regents of tho university of lectures on I geological mineralogical meteorological metallurgical and kindred subjects to advanced vanced students of the university and to residents of Utah Second Tho formation of natural science collections and a natural science library to be located in said territory tory especial attention therein to be given to the mineral resources and building material ma-terial of the territory ThirdTo form the basis of a future school of mines This is the law of the territory In com lianco with this classes in mineralogy and geology havo been formed lectures have been given some specimens have been collected and placed in the university and some laboratory work has been done and is now being carried ou with the more advanced ad-vanced students During the present academic j ear eightyseven students have been in regular attendance at lectures and iractical exercises in geolojry and mineralogy mineral-ogy at least twelve of whom are expecting to complete the courses in tho mining department de-partment We understand that funds are greatly needed for tho purchase of apparatus appara-tus books models and material for carrying carry-ing through the work |
