Show SHOT THE MARSHAL Deputy J J B McLellan Shot by Ex Deputy Whetstone THE WOUNDED MAN WILL DIE Constable Flcmmlne Kills Deputy Marshal fcara Trltchnrd of Idaho While Serving I WarrantFerdinand Van Zandta Suicide OGDEN Utah March 5Special tele fram to THE HEUALD Another shooting scrape was added to those that have occurred oc-curred in Ogden in the past two years Shortly before midnight Deputy United States Marshal J B McLellan was shot by exDeputy Marshal H Whetstone in the Palace saloon owned by Keck Ao Robe the same place in which John Hamer was mortally wounded from a shot tired by James Griffins revolver about a year and a half ago Particulars as near as could be learned are as follows Deputy Marshal St John McLellan Attorney Ogden Riles of Salt Lake and Whetstone were seated in the wine room in the saloon while having I social chat and drinking some Whetstone accused Riles of doing him some unfriendly act in court at one time Ho had been drinking considerable and McLellan told him that it was no time to talk of things that had occurred in the past and rather took the part of a peace maker They became considerably con-siderably heated and McLellan pulled his coat but trouble was averted by the others In the meantime Whetstone went out and I returned soon prepared with a 15calibre revolver He went to the back part of the saloon where one of the owners of the saloon was standing Pre sently Constable H E Steele came in and went up to him and used his efforts with those of the proprietor to keep him from raising any trouble McLellan followed fol-lowed shortly and Whetstone said to him ac dont you come this way McLellan paid no attention and walked on When I within about four feet of him Whetstone fired The ball entered below the left shoulder down between the first and second sec-ond ribs into the thoracic cavity shattering shatter-ing the spinal column The wounded man ell to the floor and was carried to an adjoining joining room placed on a cot and medical aid was summoned Drs Gordon Kennedy I and Adams were soon on the scene and began probing for the bullet Whetstone took a back street and was arrested in aback a-back alley by Police Officer F B Mitchell and Patrolman Turner and taken to the city jail and locked up Two chambers of his revolver were empty he having fred one shot in the alley and tho caps of both were snapped McLellans body from the pit of the stomach down became almost instantly paralyzed and after an hour he began sinking rapidly Atthis writing 2 oclock McLellan is very low and medical attend ants say there is only one chance in a thousand of his recovering He has a family consisting of a wife and soveral children Whetstone also has a family The latter was seen at the city jail by THE HERALD man and he refused to talk He would not say anything to the police only that he didnt want his wife to know what had occurred I is said baa feeling has existed between the men for several months McLellan is conscious at this writing and his deposition will be taken McLellan resigned position Friday and it is said was about to move to Salt Lake |
