Show 9BI SCHOOL DISTRICT PROPERTY It is observed tUatin some Of the school districts the people have expressed it as proper that the old trustees shall convoy the property of the districts to the new city board of education In other districts the people are halting and they are asking as to the legal status of the business In certain districts special taxes were voted last year to be levied and collected this year In others no such taxes were assessed as-sessed It is thus apparent that matters are con siderablyjumbled and trouble is likely to ensue Some of tho former districts are well provided with school houses furniture and apparatus and will therefore not have to draw from thc general fund provIded pro-vided by the new law while other districts must at once be supplied with houses and the requisite School appliances But the greatest trouble is likely to grow out of the special taxes levied to provide funds for new schoolhouses and furni ft ture It would be manifestly wrong to turn this money into the general fund as those who contributed it willin addition have top to-p tho regular school tax they will derive de-rive no benefit from the special taxthat is to say no benefit which will not also be shared by the people of other districts who have not assessed themselves In our opinion opin-ion all these special taxes should be abandoned aban-doned and we think that legal staps to that end should be at once taken in the courts There certainly must be some way for correcting cor-recting a wrong and preventing an injustice I injus-tice No fairminded person would interpose inter-pose an objection to the voiding of the i special assessments Whatever Is Gone r should be instituted at once and should be I undertaken and carried through in a Iriendly spirit the effort of I all parties beIng be-ing to adjust the difficulty and settle the dispute in a manner that will work the least possible injustice If attorneys for the board of education and others representing repre-senting tho school districts will get together to-gether they can doubtless arrange a settlement set-tlement that will be satiafatory to all and be confirmed by the courts |
