Show THE OLD FORT BLOCK Those Who Favor the Bacon Proposition Some Kay the Kequestis a Very Modest One That Part of the City Given Over to Railways Already The proposition made by J H Bacon to the city council on Tuesday night asking for the transfer to him of the Old Fort square as depot grounds for the Deep Creek railroad upon several conditions among them that he pay the city 150000 is a subject of earnest discussion in busi ness circles A HERALD reporter yesterday yester-day obtained the opinions of a number of business men on the proposition President Stout of the Utah Commercial Commer-cial bank saidI woultT like to see the railroad road project carried out as it would be a good thing for the city I any agreements are made I hope they will be of the most definite character so that there can be no shirking or delay on either side Postmaster Bunton Of course I want to see Mr Bacons petition granted Why in the first place nearly everyone was in favor of giving tho square on condition that the road should be built Now Mr Bacon comes in with an offer of 150000 for the square and the city isnt taking the slightest risk as Mr Bacon doesnt get the property until he hss built the road I dont see why there should ba any question about the advisability of accepting accept-ing the offer Salt Lake needs the Deep Creek road vastly more than it needs this square and besides the city will get 15U i 000 cold cash This proposition isa much better one for the city than the first and I hope to see it accepted without delay Secretary SellsI was in favor of accepting ac-cepting Mr Bacons first proposition This second offer is a much better one than that and of course I want to see it go through i H Bamberger Largo enterprises such i as this is are encouraged all over tho country coun-try Few cities have ever had 1 better proposition made than this of Mr Bacons it should be accepted Tno offer is I definite defi-nite one and the city would be taking no risk in accepting it It seems to me that every one who has the welfare of the city at heart must be in favor of encouraging Mr Bacon to the limited extent he asks Union Ticket Agent HeJges have no doubt at all but that the proposition will go through all right I is such a one as any city in the United States would be glad to accept and it will be accepted nere C D St George Mr Bacon asks very little and I think it should be granted to him without delay That Deep Creek road means a great deal for Salt Lake and it would Do worse than folly not to accept this offer F E McGurrin Tho city ought to be willing to give the square for nothing to secure tIe building of the road t Deep Creek I cannot see what objection taere can be to accepting the proposition I regard it as a generous one and it ought to be granted Most cities would be glad to give a good big bonus for such a road In this case the road will be built and the city will get full value for the property to be used as depot grounds Secretary Pollock of the stock exchange I dont know whether L can give my opinion it cost me a good deal to find our what I know I know there is a world of o ore down there as we had a prospector ia Deep Creek before the road was contemplated contem-plated The ore as I understand it is rather low grade The road will not only open up a new mining camp but will do velop a great agricultural country As far as Bacon is concerned I believe the city should give him all tho assistance it can Major ErbAs a rule 1 am not in favor of giving these squares away That part of the city where the Old Fort square is located lo-cated however is already given up to the railroads and it will never make much of a park in any event For these leasons I am in favor of accepting Mr Bacons proposition proposi-tion and expending the 150000 in improving the Eighth ward square which is well located lo-cated The road would be a big thing for the city and Mr Bacon asks for very little I think he ought to get it JQdge Colborn It seems to me that there is every reason why the proposition should bo accented In the first oiaca Mr Bacon frst Uace offers to give all the square is really worth and then build the road The city needs the road badly and I cannot see that it needs this particular square We should certainly give an enterprise of this importance import-ance and which will result in so much ment benefit asked to the city the slight encourage A J WhiteI think it will be a mistake not to grant the petition They say there are two sides to every question but I dont see but one tothis President Lett cf the real estate exchange ex-change thought Mr Bacon had offered all the square was worth He thought the offer should be accepted |
