Show I PINE RIDGE INDIANBa t Troops Have Been Sent to Watch Their Movements THE CELEBRATED KEThMLER CASE Judjre Wallace of the United States Circuit Court Grants a Writ of Habeas Corpus Cor-pus Bejmbllean Caucus OMAHA Neb April29 Special telegram to THE HEltALDIt was announced at the headquarters head-quarters for the department of the Platte today to-day that Troops A and B under command of Captain Wells had arrived at Oelrichs South Dakota from Fort Meade and had gone into camp at that place having been ordered by the general commanding the department to intercept inter-cept the Pine Ridge Cheyente Indians who arc growing very restive at the agency Should the Indians now at the agency attempt to join their Montana brethren it will be the mission of the government to drive them back General Manager Dickinson and the conductors conduc-tors of the Union Pacific system arc still tit loggerheads Mr Dickinson having signilied to The men that he will respond to their ultimatum in writing I know where they stand said Mr Dickinson to your correspondent today They know where I stand Because Mr Res segule saw fit to grant his men everything they wanted is no reason why I should do the same thing There is a vast difference between the physical conditions of his division and mine Train crews out there ought to receivelmore pay than on the Missouri River division My fellows would not exchange places with them for considerably more pay The object of the present agitation is a simple one The men want the schedule on branch lines revised raising conductors from 830 to 100 and brakemen brake-men from SCO to 565 to S jTJ The Burlington Missouri Pacific and Elk Horn pay their branch linemen as low as 500 for conductors and fla for brakemen On their main line conductors get 8100 and mileage is not taken into consideration con-sideration In my opinion it was a mistake to undertake a settlement of the difficulty in a general meeting Four or five general managers mana-gers and division superintendents are just as liable to differ and disagree as a like number of conductors One man could have done the business much easier I believe however that we will get through with it all right and reach a satisfactory conclusion |
