Show The President on nolle Buildings WASHINGTON Aril 29 President Harrison has vetoed the House bill authorizing the construction con-struction of an additional public building at Dallas Texas at a cost 3300000 The bill as originally introduced fixed S1COOOO as the limit of expense and the President cites Presient a letter from the supervising architect supervising archiect of the treasury that an extension of ample dimensions could be erected for 8100000 The building for which the extension was proposed cost 3123000 and was only completed last year The President says in part I am not unfriendly to a liberal annual expenditure for the erection of public buildings where the safety and convenience to the transaction of public business demand it and the state revenues will permit It would be wiser in mp opinion to build more and less costly houses and to fix by a general law the amount of annual expendi tures for this purpose and to some order of preference for cities asking for public build logs But in view of pending legislation look ing to a very large reduction of our revenues and the urgency and necessity for a large in crease in our expenditures in certain directions I am of the opinion that all appropriations for the erection of public buildnjS and all kindred expenditures should be kept at a minimum until the effect of other probable legislation is accurately measured The erec tion of public buildings is largely a matter of ItS fll icn wiilc rhA ir penditures for enlarged relict anti recogaiioa of the soldiers and sailors of the war for neces sary coast defenses and for the extension of our commerce with other American states are of universal necessity and involve considera tions not of convenience but of justice honor safety and generalprosperiiy A delegation of twenty young colored men representing a free American press with F L Thornton of New York as spokesman wailed on the President today and urged the appointment appoint-ment of EdwardJP McCabe of Oklahoma as secretary of that territory Grosvenor introduced In the House a bill ad ding to the interstate act a section forbidding I common carriers to transport oild etc In tank cars at a less rate than in wcoden packages or barrels In car loads Sherman introduced a similar bill in the Senate |
