Show THE PARIS TRUNK MYSTERY Gabrielle Bompartl Tells About theMurder of M Gouffe Marshal of Paris Special to THE HERALDExaminer Dispatch NEW YORK Feb 6It looks at last as if the great Paris trunk mystery has been solved i the latest story and it is a thrill ing one be true The murderer was in this city not so very long ago and may be here yet but no one has gut track of him up to the present time OU July 201SS9 M Gouffe marshal of Paris was foully murdered and his body packed in C trunk and with the head done up in a rubber bag found in a ditch in Millery wood near Lyons Ly-ons The department of justice sought long for a clew and found that a handsome brunette named Gabrielle Bompard had been intimate with the dead man but had disappeared and could not be found In the latter part of January the woman suddenly sud-denly turned up in the office of the prefect of police and told a story which caused the arrest of two Paris citizens as accessories to the crime Gabrielle Bompard said she came to Paris from America to tell the police po-lice all she knew about tlie murder She said it was true that Michael Eyraud who had been suspected of the crime was the guilty man The woman said that M Chotteau Eyrauds brotherinlaw was told of the crime and gave them money to take them to America ca They went to England and thence byway by-way of Quebec to New York and San Francisco She traveled as Eyrauds daughter but he soon began to treat her with great brutality In San Francisco a rich Frenchman whose name is kept secret se-cret took a great fancy to nor and as he was generously inclined the guilty pair profitted by his largess He sympathm greatly with Gabricles sufferings i finally she told him about the murder Eyraud has increased her disgust of him she said by suggesting a plan of getting get-ting hold of her new friends fortune and then murdering him and she told the latter lat-ter about this also He insisted that she return to Paris and make a confession of the whole business promising to accompany accom-pany her there and do his best to save her I from unnecessary trouble She accepted this offer and gave herself up I is understood under-stood in Paris that Inspector Byrnes is looking for Eyraud but that astute official when asked said that he had not heard of any such rogue being in this city |
