Show Norfolk Sporting and Athletic Cub SpecIal THE HERALDExaminer Dispatch RICHMOND Va April BNo little stir was caused here today by a report that under the privileges of a law recently passed by the legislature incorporating the Sporting and Athletic association of Norfolk Nor-folk this club is allowed to have pri e fights and that Sullivan and Jackson would be invited to fight without molestation molesta-tion in Virginia A movement has been started in sporting circles for this purpose Opinions are divided among citizens as to whether the fight ought to be permitted A young lawyer asserts that any interference on the part of the police with the fighters would be illegal as the law clearly gives the association the right to have these fights on their grounds Advocates of this move argue that it will attract thousands from all over the United States They think that when people learn that the fight is to take place in this state whose latest law gives the club the right t have prize fights and that therefore there-fore principals and spectators need have no fear of arrest crowds will come from all quarters Of course the Sporting and Athletic club of Norfolk wi make tremendous tremen-dous profits from the gate receipts alone I is conceded that the Norfolk club has a big monopoly until tke legislature meets and repeals the law Some very savage comments aro hoard on the subject Second Auditor Ruffin said iJ hope they will fight which they have a perfect right to do under the charter granted the Athletic and Sporting Sport-ing club and I hope they will kill each other and that will teach legislators legis-lators the necessity of carefully considering consider-ing all bills before they pass them and it will show the governor the necessity of reading all bills before he approves them John S Curtiss member of the very legislature which passed the bill said If an attempt should be made to have the prize fight in this state I believe Governor McKinney would stop it if ho had to order out all the militia and I would be one to volunteer to assist in breaking it upI up-I is understood Sullivan has expressed his willingness t come to Virginia |
