Show RESERVOIRS The Utah county authorities have done themselves proud in tho matter of preparation prepara-tion for the Senate committee on irrigation of arid lands soon to hold a session in this city Yesterday Probate Judge JONES left with the governor a sectional map of Utah county showing the lake and also all tho rivers creeks springs awl reservoirs res-ervoirs in tho county also tho canals and ditches showing how the water is I a distributed Sites for reservoirs are indicated indi-cated at various places in the canons and i gulches hero water can be conveniently and inexpensively conllned The arid land is indicated as well as the area under cultivation the rai being drawn on Furls a scale as to indicate at u a1 I glance the actual situation and jnst what is required Accompanying the map is much valuable data such as a tabulated tabu-lated statement of the ownership of the streams showing when the water was appropriated ap-propriated miles of canals in the county 002 acres of land under cultivation 09120 acres capable of cultivation with water 225540 acres of crops lost this year through lack of water 28983 and so on Tho committee com-mittee will find the map with its accompanying accompa-nying tables interesting and very complete It should need no further argument or demonstration de-monstration to convince intelligent men oC the good that would result to tho country from tho construction of tho reservoirs as proposed i Utah county is one of the best watered in the territory that is to say the water arising in and flowing through the county is perhaps more abundant the area considered than in any other The irrigation system is also extensive as shown by tho great length of canals And yet a quarter of million acres are nonproductive non-productive because there is no water for them and the present season the crops on 29000 acres were lost by reason of the drouth Water would enable the agriculturist agri-culturist to redeem and bring under cultivation culti-vation in Utah county three times as much land as is now utilized In this connection there is another matter mat-ter to he taken into account Salt Lako city and Salt Lake valley south of the city now depend largely upon the water of Utah county for irrigation and in time our southern neighbor will furnish the supply for a great part of the area of Salt Lake county A system sys-tem of reservoirs in Utah which would husband all the water arising in or entering that county would double the productive pro-ductive capacity agriculturally of Salt Lake Till HEUAID has not much faith that Congress will do anything for Utah in the matter of reservoirs The appropriations if there shall be any will bo expended in other states and territories and Utah will be left to rustle for herself just as she has been doing all these years However it is well to present the facts to the Senators and let them see what an excellent investment invest-ment it would be were government to I spend money for saving the water which now runs to waste |
