Show OFFICERS ARRESTED On Indictments Found by the Grand Jury CONSPIRACY FRAUD CHARGED Mayor Armstrong Marshal Solomon B Y Hampton Geo II Cannon E M Weiler and J I Winder the Victims The second act in the howling farce now being enacted before the courts by the grand jury wing of tte Liberal party came off yesterday afternoon and evening in the arrest of prom net city officials including Mayor Armstrong and Marshal Solomon Colonel John R Winder B Y Hampton ex County Selectman E M Weiler and County Recorder George M Cannon who were all taken before Commissioner Pratt whenthey furnished bonds for their appearance at the preliminary hearing which is to take plate on Saturday morning Marshal Solomon was arrested on the charge of misappropriating public money on six indictments in-dictments the bond in each indictment being fed at 51000 James Solomon W G Phillips and Adam Spers acted as bondsmen B Y Hampton George M Cannon and E M Weller were each arrested on the charge of conspiracy and the bonds were fixed at S1500 in each case 1 Y Hampton furnished S P Teasdel and Robert A iTper as bondsmen George l Cannon Can-non secured Adam Spiers and James Solomon and E M Weiler gave George Crismon and Oscar Harding Officers Cannon and Vander coolrserved the paper yesterday afternoon None of the parties arrested could learn what charges were preferred against them but it is generally understood that the charge of conspiracy con-spiracy is In conception with the Hydraulic Canal company which was claimed In the grand jury report to be a swindle Last evening Mayor Armstrong was seated in the city bal when Deputy Cannon entered and with a beaming smile announced Mayor Ive got a warrant for you All right answered the mayor Ill be down in the morning That wont do said the deputy Ill have to ask you to come now The mayorsaid All right and asked Cot J R Winder to boar him company as a bondsman Mr Cannon thereupon announced that he had a warrant for Mr Winder too and that gentleman gentle-man smilingly consented to go along in the character of defendant They went before Commissioner Com-missioner Pratt when the mayor was surprised and not a little indignant to be told that they had nine indictments against him He was at first disposed to go to the penitentiary rather than ask his friends to bail him on so ridiculous a charge but he finally ad he had never stolen a dollar of any mans money and he would like to face the man who said so and gave bonds In the sum of 810 500 for his appearance one of the Liberal city councilors Bolivar Roberts being one of his bondsmen H M Wells P W Madsen M E Cummings and several others also went on the bonds and the mayor and Mr Winder went free The rumor was that officers were out looking for more city council prey last evening but at last accounts Alderman McCornick Councilors Dooly Roberts and Sowles had not been apprehended appre-hended A glaring circumstance that most unblush Ingly proclaims the union of the Liberal grand jury and the Liberal newspaper and bears evidence evi-dence to the sacred way in which a Liberal grand jury guards the secrets of a Liberal grand jury com is found in the fact known to fitly printers in Salt Lake city that the irnind jury resort was in tvrce in the Tnirne ofllce before it was delivered in court I should have been a little smarter too than t zpect the public to believe that the woodcut wood-cut fac similes of vouchers printed Sunday could have been prepared between the time the report was read in court and the time the paper was printed Really Judge Powers we gave you credit for being a better manager Taken In connection with the circumstance of two weeks ago when the Tribune with a strange spurt of enterprise gave the sacredly guarded report of the Pro vo grand jury twenty four hour before i was read in court makes it no better We wonder bow long Mr Varian will permit such howling burlesques on justice to run |
