Show FOtlY NINTH CONGRESS HOUSE WASHINGTON January 15Crisp Georgia presented the conference report on the interState commerce bill stating that he did not do so for the purpose of asking action upon it at this time but in order that it might be printed in the Record and in bill form This wad ordered and Crisp gave notice that he would call up the report at an early day Morrow California from the same committee reported the bill to extend the jurisdiction of the lighthouse board to Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers House calendar Scott Pennsylvania from the committee com-mittee on coinage weights and pleasures pleas-ures reported back the Senate bill for the re tirement and recoinage of trade dollars Committee of the whole The House then in the morning hour resumed consideration of the resolution reported by the committee on mines and mining setting aside January 19th for the consideration of business reported re-ported from the committee After a short discussion upon the merits of the McGarrahan relief bill the resolution was laid on the table I Richardson Tennessee on behalf of the committee on Pacific railroads called up the joint resolution authorizing an investigation of the books accounts and methods of the Pacific railways which have received aid from the United States and the House proceeded in committee of the whole to consider the same Outhwaite Ohio hardly thought it necessary to say anything in favor of the resolution No information had ever been rendered to Congress In an official torm by which it could ascertain ascer-tain the valnes of the security which government had for the payment of its loan to Pacific railroads In opposing the funding bill the gentleman gen-tleman from Indiana Holman had stated that at the end ot ten years there would be a surplus of 144000000 of assets as-sets of the companies over their debtedness to government but he serted that an examination of the a sets would show not a dollar of surplus Crisp Georgia gave notice of an amendment directing an inquiry as to the character and amount of assets of such Pacific railroad companies as have received aid from government in bonds and what assets of each company are now subject to the lien ot government govern-ment Anderson Kansas gave notice of an amendment directing an inquiry as to whether any dividends had been unlaw fully paid on the capital stock of the racihc companies and whether any new stock had been issued or any guarantees of a pledge made without with-out any authority of law also to nquire into the facts relating to the pretended consolidation of the Union Pacific railway rail-way company and the Denver Pacific railway company into an alleged corporation poration known as the Union Pacific Railway Company The morning hour having expired the committee rose without action Hatch Missouri moved that the House go into committee of the whole on the pneumonia bill Lost Yeas 15 nays 13 Norwood Georgia rose to a ques tion of privilege in regard to the puoli cation in todays New York World in which the name of T M Norwood appears ap-pears in connection with the accounts of the Central Pacific Railroad Last night he had been waited upon by a representative of that paper who asked him whether he had ever represented a claim against the Central Pacific or Union Pacific he had forgotten which ie had replied in the negative and his statement had been published Nothing Noth-ing had been said in regard to the Southern Pacific He presumed he was the Norwood mentioned in the account In 1878 a year after his senatorial term had expired he had been engaged by the Southern Pacific as counsel in a contest between that company and the Texas Pacific which ended two years subsequently His services had been rendered pUbliclyand the items mentioned in the World he presumed to be the fees paid from time to time upon his regular salary This was his connection with the case How these items appeared in the account of the Central Pacific Company with the United States he did not know He never in any shape had any connection with the Central Pacific or Union Pacific Company The Speaker announced the appointment appoint-ment of Tucker Collins and E B Taylor Ohio as conferees on the auti polygamy bill The House then went into committee of the whole on the rivt r and harbor appropriation ap-propriation bill The House in committee of the whole considered the river and harbor billbut pending further deoate the committee rose and the House adjourned |
