Show At 11 oclock the regular convention was culled to order the officers of the pecial convention were elected to the same position Chairman Williams stated that the purpose of the convention was the adop tion of new school books or the re adoption of old ones as the convention might see fit The Question of readers and spellers was disposd of by the pecial cinvention the question of all i ther text books was now before this meeting The chairman mane a brief address upon the importance of the duty before the members urging them discuss freely and fully all questions arising as to the best books to be I adopted Mr Maeaer moved for the appoint meat of a committee on each of the books to be considered Carried Dr Park made a similar motion I making three the number on each com mittee and naming the books to be considered The chairman made the appointments as follows Wooten ON GBAMMAB Messrs Park Apperly ON ARITHMETIC Messrs Stewart Callester and Chappell ON GEOGRAPRYMe5srs ReId Steed and Rer > ON PEN NSHII Messrs Anderson Peters and Seward ON DRAWING Messrs Maeaer Welch and Apperly ON PHYSIOLOGY Messrs Park Chap pell and Bean Mr Chappell moved for the appointment appoint-ment of a committee on miscellaneous bo iks Opposed by Messrs Stewart and Callester who thought the matter of supplementary books should be left to the teachers Mr Woodbury thought if the committee could recommend the miscellaneous books to be used it would be a good thing for teachers The motion was carried and Messrs Chappell Woodbury and Callister were named as the committee to consider the question of miscellaneous books Mr Welch asked whether it would not be advisable to appoint a committee on history as the histories now in use expired with the five years limit On motion the following members mem-bers were appointed a committee on history Messrs Maeser Stewart and Welch t < ome discussion ensued as to the riLht of people to whom the courtesies of the convention had been tendered to address the chair Mr Dwyer who rose to made a remark and Mr Harrington Har-rington who rose to ask for some information in-formation were rather peremptorily called to order as being nonmembers The chairman said he would answer any questions from nonmembers at recess He could not have the convention con-vention interrupted however rho regular convention then adjourned ad-journed til2oclock this atternoon the various committees went to work at once and were busy during the remainder re-mainder of the day listening to the reD resentations of the publishers agents The books at present in use by the district schools are as follows Rays Arithmetic Van Antwerp Bragg Co publishers Swintons Grammar Harper Bros publishers Appletons Geographies D Appleton c Co publishers Spencerian system of Penmanship Appleton Appletons awing books Pathfinders series of Phys ologv Barnes k Co Andersons History Clark Maynard represented by Dwyer The absence of so large a portion of the county superintendents eight out oi twentyfour just 33 per cent is very regrettable In most cases however how-ever the absentees belong to distant counties and the salaries they receive from the counties are so inadequate that they can hardly be expected to take much interest in the cause Many of those now in attendance only receive 100 a year Eight dollars a month or superintending the educational affairs of their respective counties Thrir traveling expenses and living while attending these conventions will inmost in-most cases cat up the most part of a years pay That there should be so active and energetic an interest taken in the cause of education by the present convention in view of those circumstances is highly creditable to the gentlemen at present filling the offices |
