Show AT THE TABERNACLE Elders John BMaiben and E G Woolley Speak TESTIMONIES TO THE TRUTH The Spread of the Gospel the Gathering Gather-ing and Unity of the People and 8elfGoT rnment Touched UPJII The hymn with which the services at the Tabernacle were begun on Sunday afternoon last was the one commencing Now let us rejoice In the day of salvation etc Prayer by Elder H S Richards Singing of the hymn beginning How sweet communion is on earth ELDER JOHN B MAIDEN occupied the stand and testified of the goodness of God and the truth of the everlasting gospel Peace on earth and good will to man was the principle underlying that gospel and the honest in heart had through it embraced the gospel of salvation He was a witness that the promises of the elders to those who had been baptized had been verified when the member had observed the laws and commandments of God The growth of the Mormon people was satisfactory and the peace and plenty which reigned in their midst demonstrated that God was with them and that to bless If the principles and ordinances are observed there will be a growth of knowledge and power of God By walking in the paths pointed out by the servants of God a constant renewal of the promises of the Almighty was realized The Saints were Increasing in harmony and union he was pleased to say There is nothing of an exclusive character in the gospel of Jesus The Saints were enjoined by the gospel to recognize and honor all men rearing the holy priesthood and that God is the Supreme Lawgiver of the universe they were taught to respect the rights of all mankind When God requires a people to follow a certain line of conduct and they walk therein Bis arm is made manifest in their behalf be-half Since the organization of the church there has been no ordeal through which the Saints have had to pass but that after they have emerged from it they have not seen the wisdom of the Almighty Those who proved faithful in the hour of trial have always been favored of God It was the duty of the Saints to meet every issue calmly peaceably loyally and earnestly relying on God for His aid and grace There is a silver lining to all dark clouds and behind them is ever a smiling Providence Provi-dence Elder Maiben bore testimony that God had revealed the fullness of the gospel in this age He urged upon all not to shrink from duty to God to strive for the establishment of truth Its It-s true he said that the leaders of Israel who are ordained of God have had to retire for a season from public gaze but thank God they have the power to write the mind and will of God to the people The epistles issued by them breathed forth a conservative element and contained nothing which might be termed disloyal or wrong The principles of human rights those guaranteed guar-anteed by the Constitution were the foundation for the utterances in them The mission of the Saints was like unto that of Jesusto save and not to destroy All that He taught was in this direction It was incumbent upon all to obesrve His teachings and be faith ul turning neither to the right hand nor to the left ia the line of duty In the dedicatory prayer at the Kirtland Temple Joseph Smith beseeched be-seeched the Lord to be with and bless the Saints Then there was but one stake of Zion now there are thirty or more In this Territory and neighborhood After a while the Mormons will graduate gradu-ate and receive their diplomas in the workof salvation in which they are engaged en-gaged The temple at Manti was nearing near-ing completion he was pleased to state though work on it had not been prose outed with that zeal which should have characterized so grand and worthy an object When it is completed it will be an honor to God and a credit to the people who have erected it The Saints were increasing in their desires to labor for eternal and celestial things and their work which was characterized by love union and peace was tending to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and vice vena The virtues of this people will bear witness to the world as they are borne not only by elders but by tourists and strangers who visit Utah of the good they are doing and that God is on their side Every word of the prophets concerning the Saints will be verified truth will tn umph over error virtue over vice In conclusion he counseled and admonished ad-monished all to treat the stranger well observe the laws of the gospel be kind and generous to all who come within their spheres to cultivate unity of feeling feel-ing and action and be prepared to meet the Savior when He comes ELDER E G WOOLLEY desired the Spirit of the Lord while he spoke He realized that an elder was expected to strengthen the people in their faith and all elders should realize this as t ey and the Saints met together for this purpose It is more than half a century since the gospel was restored to the earth through the instrumentality of Joseph Smith The Latterday Saints profess more than any other people on the earth they profess to have revelation reve-lation concerning the mind and will of God that they have been elected to establish es-tablish the kingdom of God upon the arth which is to exist forever that this is a practical everyday work they knew that faith in the Lord Jesus Christ without works would not accomplish accom-plish the great and mighty work that is to be accomplished This being so the Saints should realize the duties and responsibilities re-sponsibilities devolving upon them and then join in and assist in the work of salvation The principle of gathering was cited as an instance that union wa required order to further Gods purposes pur-poses on the earth The elders have gone abroad preaching and gathering people for Utah for about forty year Considerable had been accomplished but in comparison with what was to be done it was but a mere trifle H > counseled all to forsake the use of intoxicants in-toxicants and those things which disgrace dis-grace He saw many evils existing among the youth especially among which was that of the use of tobacco This he decried there is no excuse tOJ those indulging in such evil practices and urged an observance of the Word of Wisdom The Saints were taught to bt unitedhe said In temporal as well zu spiritual matters intheoryas well as practice The work required constant exertion and it was necessary to labor together each otherswelfare In order to accomplish what the Lord requires re-quires of them they must become more united Jesus said cIf ye are not one ye are not nine The world did not understand why the Saints were gathered together the Saints understood under-stood it and knew that it was the ultimate ulti-mate triumph of truth and the establishment establish-ment of rods kingdom They expected to go on increasing and growing until they tilled this Territory until there a all be no more room they would then spread until they filled another and another Territory until the object to be attained previous to the coming of the Son of God was attained when the kingdoms of this world would become His With this before them the Saints should live and learn to govern first themselves and then the ptople and the young Latterday Saints now growing grow-ing up should fit and prepare themselves them-selves for their future work He believed the rising generation had better opportunities oppor-tunities than their fathers had in this regard So far as the Saints obeyed the laws of God they would be entitled to the blessings of heaven He would like to see all appreciate the duties and responsibilities re-sponsibilities devolving upon them The work would go on no matter who shirked or turned aside Opposition tendered to solidifythe ranks of the Saints and if the outside element under derstood this they would cease their efforts ef-forts to overturn the Mormon system and retard the progress of the work of the Almighty God intend the Saints to remain in Utah and their staying depended upon the people themselves One thing was necessary he said in order or-der to insure the permanent location of thSSaints in these valleys Forty years ago they located the land here they hold a great majority of the soil here and if they realize and sense the idea that they came here to occupy the country they will retain the land their heritages which belong to them This was probably advocating exclusiveness but it was necessary to insure lo the people those rights which belong to them The community was spreading and growing adjoining j Territories were being peopled by them and would continue so to do He hoped for strength and faith to remain true to his covenants The Saints would oppress no one who did not believe as they did He prayed that all would live so as to be worthy of all that the Lord has promised pro-mised the faithful Singing of the anthem 0 Father Almighty Benediction by Elder John Alford 1 T |
