Show I n flHE NEWS IN OGDEN I The Funeral Services of the Late Judge Emerson A VERY LARGE ATTENDANCE The Transactions In Rcaltj The Pioneer Making Regular Trips City Council this Evening The City In Brief v SALT LAKE HERALD BUKEAV J Main Street > 4pb OGD March 22 1SS9 Early yesterday 1 morning the streets of this city presented a Sundyliko appearance appear-ance and many business houses were closed The citizens put off thoir business transactions tran-sactions and attired in sombre hued garments gar-ments with knots of crape on the arm of their coats congregated at the various society so-ciety headquarters to atUjst their respect by their presence at ths funeral of the late Hon P H Emerson Shortly before 10 oclock the D e U G special steamed into the depot bearing the members of Utah commaudery Ko 1 Knight Templars of Salt Lake City together to-gether with several of the legal profession and Cornel Hac and Captain Ward of Poit Douglas They proceeded to the Masonic hall in front of which the line of march was formed by the members of that and other societies to start for the residence of the deceased de-ceased The column moved at 1015 am and marcehd west on Fourth street to Pearl thence north on Pearl to the residence Here a large assemblage was found in and about the spacious grounds surrounding the residence Prayer was offered over the re utoSus by Hev Mr Baily of the Congreg tijKal churehaftcr which the remains were placed on suitable supports in the yard and the throng passed by with uncovered heads to view them At this juncture the band which was stationed in the corner of the yard played Nearer My God to Thee and At Rest in a most beautiful and impressive manner Scarcely a dry eye could be seen owing to the solemnity of the occasion and the effective effect-ive music The procession was then formed in front of the house on Pearl street the right resting rest-ing on Fourth street in following order The Ogden brass band H W Emmett leader Utah Commandcry No 1 Knights Templar Tem-plar of Salt Lake city Samuel Paul eminent emi-nent commander El Monte Commandery No 2 of Ogden H T Snyder eminent commander Grand Lodge A F AM of Utah territory ter-ritory A li Hay wood grand master The Ancient Order of United Workmen Fidelity Lodgo No 3 W H Turner marshal mar-shal Then came the legal profession conducted by Uansford Smith and the chamber of commerce members with H L Griffin as marshal The hearse attenocd by uniformed members of the El Monte commandary who had charge of the obsequies was followed by a long string of carriages The procession was nearly a mile in length and took about half an hour to pass a given point The band played the funeral march Bravo Heroes as they camo down the Fourth street hill The line of march was west on Fourth to Main and south on Main to Mountain View cemetery where the closing ceremonies were conducted according to the ritual of the Knignt Templars A large number of business houses closed in the morning and remained closed until after the procession had returned from the itMeter |
