Show THE PLACE HUNTERS Not Much Surprise i Created by the Appointments Made NOT BIG ENOUGH FOR MEXICO Egan Kay be Disappointed lilalnos Friends Disappointed at His Small Influence With the President Special to TUB HERATD Examiner Dispatch WASHINGTON March 21 Republican Senators as well a the placehunters are I getting a little impatient at President Harrisons slowness in sending in nominations nomina-tions There is little satisfaction in going to the capitol every day and sitting an hour or two to have only two or three important names sent in Senator Hoar of Massachusetts Massa-chusetts remarked today that the Senate would probably bo in session for two weeks The hour of meeting having been changed to 1 oclock gives tho president a longer period in the morning to make up his mind The two nominations made to first class places were not of a character to create much surprise The appointment of John C New to the I consul generalship at London was contingent con-tingent in his willingness to accept the place as announced in their dispatches last week SOMETHING SATISFACTORY The appointment of Colonel Fred Grant to the Austrian mission was not a surprise to his friends after an interview they had with the President a few days ago They wanted him sent to China but the President Presi-dent told them ho meant to select men of special ability for the four courts of England Eng-land China Mexico and Germany Hesaid that while he respected and liked Colonel Grant he did not feel that he was exactly fitted for either of these four places He would however give him a diplomatic position po-sition of dignity which would be satisfac tory to his friends In pursuance of this promise he sent in Colonel Grants name EGAN NOT A ceRTAINTY His declaration regarding these four missions mis-sions will have an interest for Patrick Egaiis friends They have been very confident con-fident that Mr Egan was to get the Mexican I Mexi-can mission and Mr Egan has intimated as much in private conversation But those who know say that the President does not regard 11 Egan as a big enough man for the place He is anxious to recognize the IrishAmericans but he will have to put 11 Egan off with some other place IUAINE DISIJEGAUDCn Some of the critics of Mr Blaine are beginning be-ginning to comment on the little influence he seems to exert over the foreign appointments appoint-ments Such appointments as those of Palmer to Spain Swift to Japan and New to London Lon-don have been exclusively personal through President Harrison while Mr Blames recommendations have been disregarded disre-garded and some of his lists of appointments appoint-ments shoved in neglected pigeon holes of the Presidential desk Before the nomination of Julius Goldsmith Gold-smith of Wisconsin yesterday to be consul general at Vienna Mr Blaine was sent for from the Whitehouse and told that the nomination nom-ination was going in He had never heard of Mr Goldsmith and did not know him to be a mugwump but he found that the President was determined to appoint him and so he gracefully wheeled into line Mr Blaine had another candidate for the place Ho will be obliged to notifj him that circumstances beyond his control have prevented his appointment |
