Show STRIKING THE ROCKS The Modern Moses at Work in City Creek Canyon HOW NEW WATER iIS OBTAINED The Work Now Going on at liberty Park The Drive Wells Lately Ordered to be Comnercd Immediately Considerable has been said concerning the work now being prosecuted in City Creek canon under the direction of Superintend ent Ottmger and with a view Of ascertaining ascertain-ing just how Successful tho efforts to increase in-crease the flow of City creek have been U HERALD representative took an early morning spin up the cation yesterday arriving at the Waterworks camp a little after 6 oclock The gang of workmen work-men were indulging in their morning meal as the newspaper man appeared upon the scene and the manner in which the edibles were being disposed of gave positive proof of the tonic properties of City Creek air propertes ar Under the guidance of Foreman Thomas McEwan our reporter inspected the work done and being done According to the suggestions made by Councilor Smith THE BED OF THE CREEK has been cleared of the heavy boulders as much a possible tho waters now being confined to a comparatively small area where formerly they spread over three and four times the present surface The result of this is that evaporation is r duced to a minimum and tho creel is a rushing stream where formerly it ran quietly along At every point on the road between the head of tao waterworks system and the point known as the Seven Mile Mill each of tho little streams that have bee running into the creek have been cleaned out and developed as far as possible Of course these cut but a small figure but in prosecuting the work tho idea has been kept in view that every little helps The most effectual work however ha been accomplished the other side of the null and ml IN THE NORTH rom three big springs have been opened which have more than trebled the quantity of water running down this ravine At one point the ground appeared to be moist and development proved that a big stream wa awaiting to be let loose After a tunnel or excavation had been made for several feet a ledge of limestone was struck and the application of a few charges of giant powder cleared away amass a-mass of rock exposing a good stream of pure cold water which was soon increased until now the flow is a most excellent one Two other similar streams were also unlocked un-locked in the same vicinity and there is every reason to believe that i the work is kept upand the city officers say it will be a volume of water equal to nearly the present flow of City creek can be ob tamed from the North Fork alone Foreman McEwan is more than satisfied with the result so far attained there and sajs he is confident Fork that the present stream in North CAN BE DOUBLED Although the three springs are close together to-gether no diminution has been noticed in those struck first in consequence of devel oping the others indeed it is said that i there is any change in the springs it has been in an increase rather than a decrease The flow now coming from North Fork where work was but recently commenced is small compared with that obtained from springs developed farther up the cal on and along the main creek In no case has there been a failure to stake a flow wherever wher-ever it has been deemed fit to commence work and it is certain that at least a par list solution ol the water problem lies in boring the limestone uedges which undoubtedly un-doubtedly hold back immense quantities of water which can bo obtained at a com oaiativelv small cost and in places where it c m be easily conducted to City crcekan thence to this city It has been said by those who have measured meas-ured the flow from the springs mentioned that at least TWO MILLION GALLONS OF NEWT WATER issues from them every twentj four hours 1 hat this can be doubled is beyond ques tion Some are confident that it can bo trebled and this would maIm a stream lancer than the City creek of tho present Under such circumstances it is no won der that Mr Ottinger is so positive in his assertions that a partial solution of theater the-ater problem lies in striking the rocks in City Creek caQon The force at present working in the eafion might be doubled with good results THE ArTESIAX WELL Tho artesian well being sunk at tho southeast corer of Liberty park is now d wn a lOut fifty feet For the frt five feet the borers encounteied earth and gravel tnen a big strata of clay and now a seam of boulders has been encountered Water was struck several days ago and about fifty gallons a minute is now flowing Councilor Smith says they will go down at least two hundred feet more and he is certain that a laree and permanent Supply will be attained at-tained at that depth THE DRIVE WELL SYSTEM The major and others yesterday took a trip around the Sixteenth Seventeenth and Nineteenth wardswith a view to selecting se-lecting the best points at which to sink tho drive wells recently ordered to be put down by the city council Work on these would have been commenced before but it has been simply impossible to obtain the necessary nec-essary machinery We have the word of the committee however that arrangements arrange-ments have been made whereby the feasibility feasi-bility of this system will be at once established estab-lished If Major Armstrong is half as successful in obtaining water by this method in the places mentioned as he was on the Jordan west of Lehi the inhabitants inhabi-tants of the parchedjdistnct embraced in the wards above named will at least obtain partial relief very soon |
