Show Ix A case before the newlymade United States commissioner GPEENMAN on Friday Fri-day the reporters quote the official named as saying of the defendant He must bo a gay old rooster Now this may be very humorous language on the street and among the boys but we suggest sug-gest that it is a long way out of place in a court of justice where the proceedings are supposed to be conducted with some regard for the decencies and the proprieties if not for the feelings of the accused The language would be gentlemanly nowhere and coming from a judge on the bench > it is both vulgar and disgraceful and strongly suggestive of the proposition that the new commissioner commis-sioner may not be the right man in the right place If the judge has so little re speetfordignity and decency how can he hope to inspire in others the respect and gentlemanly consideration due to the court Captain GREENMAN should give himself a few moments for reflection and during that time should impress it upon his mind that as United States commissioner sitting as a magistrate he should be radically different dif-ferent from a street stroller cracking smutty jokes and indulging in blackguard talk If he has any dignity he should show it on the bench |
