| Show A RESURRECTION Last week one Rutherford B Hayes of Fremont Ohio had a long private interview with the Presidentelect and since then the newspapers and the politicians have been giving expression to their surmises These are various and include opinions that the aforesaid Hayes is to represent the United States at the court of St James that he will go to Germany as American Minister that he will enter the Cabinet to be formed next March and that he will be the new Presidents confidential adviser as to how the Federal patronage patron-age should be distributed in the Buckeye Buck-eye State These are only surmises and they may mean something or nothing They are interesting only in one respect re-spect and that is in so far as they indicate indi-cate the possible resurrection politically politi-cally of the defunct Hayes Never before was there a public man who went more completely out of sight and esteem while still above ground He held the Presidency by a defective title conferred on him by fraud and force on the part of the Republicans aud fear and cowardice on the part of the Democrats Demo-crats In office he was weak and personally per-sonally insignificant though his fairly able Cabinet managed to impart to the administration an air of respectability His term expiring he sneaked off into retirement as if ashamed to mingle among his fellows and until this year I has been seen and heard only at county fairs where he delivered eulogies on prize pumpkins and fat fowls and at school commencements He permitted himself to be snuffed out as it were and politicians and press were pleased at the effacement If the stories now being told are true there was method in his deportment He went into retirement until the great crime committed in his behalf should be forgotten or glossed over with age all the time having in his mind a reappearance in the politics scene Evidently he thinks he can venture out in safety and by degrees during the year he has crowded himself forward until now he comes into view as something more than a hen fancier and a judge of farm products It Is entertaining to note his career for the past twelve years up to the present and it will be interesting to watch him from now on 1 |
