Show SCENES AND SIGHTS Incidents of the Par Benewlng Allegiance to the Government NEW Yom May 1The crowds along the line of March were as large a yester day but there was a difference in their appearance Yesterday the soldiers were marching and the observers were the ct izens j today the visiting military were scattered among the onlookers and the citizens doing the walking I President Harrison in barouche dawn by four horses headed by a squad of I mounted police and accompanied by Vice President Morton drove up to the Madison square reviewing stand at 10 1 minutes past 10 oclock ExPresidents Hayes and Cleveland Secretaries Proctor Tracy Windom and Rusk General Sherman Sher-man and Russell Harrison had previously arrived Others on the stand were Generrl J M Varnum Governor Burleigh of Maine and staff BrigadierGeneral H I Sprague BrigadierGeneral John Heapper Fred Douglas who received a cheer as he entered en-tered the stand and Senator Gibson of Maryland Mayor Grant with a body of aides who had been waiting at Twentyfifth street stepped forward and presented the Presi dent with an address enclosed in a cylinder of retrousse silver The mayor then took his place on the stand beside the President and the big parade began to pass bOne b-One of the large floats in the shape of a triumphal arch was wrecked by an elec trio light wire on the way to join the procession On it were seated twenty young ladies who were tossed about and thrown to the ground but none were dangerously dan-gerously hurt The address presented to the President was from the civic commercial industrial and educational bodies of the city in which hey renew their allegiance to the government govern-ment and congratulate the President on years the completion of the nations first hundred |
