Show TIE PRESIDENCY Rutherford B Hayes Orates and Says Some Goo Things Following Senator Daniel ex President Hayes responded to the toast The Presidency Presi-dency He reviewed the early days of the government the reasons of the constitution consti-tution of the chief magistracy and the presidency and said Experience has shown that in ordinary time the executive power is of no greater importance nerhaps It is less vital than the legislative or judicial ju-dicial power when gigantic perils and disasters threaten When extraordinary character and powers are demanded their occasions have always found strong hands to deal with We can truly say of the presidency that the results of wentyfiye consecutive terms have indica ted the wisdom of the fathers who estab ished it Of twentytwo terms there are two things which may be said one is that no great remediless harm came through executive power to the people it was intended t serve the other that if no eminent historical benefit lasting through the ages was conferred by most of I them it was perhaps because the oppor tunity for illustrious achievement did not occur but during them all the nation by its inherent resources and energy pushed rapidly forward in a career of unparalleled prosperity and happiness unimpeded by executive crimes or blunders Finally during the critical and anxious years of the ther three presidential terms the opportunity opportu-nity came and she gave to the world two chief magistrates in whose characters and deeds unrivaled in human annals were shown devotion to their country and to mankind which en able them t furnish an example of ind > endence of personal advantage and of sel fish love of power of wealth and of title either for themselves or for their families absolutely unknown in the history of the world and by their administrations of the residency Washington and Lincoln made the great office and the country whoso completion com-pletion we celebrate forever illustrious Mr Hayes was followed by Sendtor Evarts who spoke t The Judiciary General Sacrman was cheered when horse ho-rse to respond to the Army and Navy Our Schools and Colleges wasthe next tat to which Harvards presidoutCharles W Elliot responded Hon James Russell Lowell had Our literature Thus twelve toasts were spoken to and the hour was late when the most notable banquet of these times had ended |
