Show Agricultural Experiment Stations I The first document published under I the authority of the secretary of agriculture I agricul-ture is Experiment Station Bulletin No 1 of tho newly established office of experiment ex-periment stations of tho United States department of agriculture This pamphlet pam-phlet contains a large amount of information infor-mation regarding tho history and prospects pros-pects of the agricultural experiment stations sta-tions which aro now conducting scientific scien-tific and practical experiments in tho different states Such institutions for scientific investigation in behalf of agriculture agri-culture have been long in operation in Europe The first ono in this country was begun in Connecticut in the chemical chemi-cal laboratory of Wesleyan university fourteen years ago Other states followed fol-lowed tho example and in 1887 congress appropriated 15000 per annum to each state and territory for the purpose All the states now have agricultural experiment ex-periment stations Some have two Louisiana Louis-iana has three Tho total number now in operation is fortysix or counting branch stations nearly sixty They em ploymoro than 370 scientists and agri i culturists and receive this year 595000 from the national government and about 123000 from tho state and other sources A feature is the cooperation between the stations and the department depart-ment of agriculture at Washington which is charged by congress with the duty of supervising and aiding the stations sta-tions in their work The office of experiment ex-periment stations acting with the Asso ciation of American Agricultural Colleges Col-leges and Experiment Stations is able to accomplish much in this line The bulletin bul-letin contains an introduction by the secretary Copies of this bulletin can be obtained by application to the office of experiment experi-ment stations department of agriculture agricul-ture Washington D C |
