Show American Copper Commissioner NEW YOm May 13At the steamship dock today many prominent copper operators from this city and Boston were impatiently awaiting the arrival of the Cunarder Servia for definite intelligence of the result of the European conference between American mine representatives and the defunct French syndicate people 11 Hoggin who is the sole owner of the Anaconda mine looked decidedly savage when questioned about the result of his journey abroad He said with emphasis that his trip had been productive of no good We were unable to come t any agreement and have come back to throw our metal on the market for what it will bring He positively declined to say anything further Colonel Livcrmorc who accompanied Mr Hoggai and other American mine representatives abroad inclined to be more communicative The report Livermore said that the Americans found the Frenchmen French-men reluctant tomeet the nine owners halfway half-way in settling the difficulty was entirely without foundation The Frenchmen seemed always ready and willing to entente ente-nte any agreement t prevent a panic The French bankers who held the copper even now have entire confidence in the metal as security Col Livermore gave an outline of the terms offered by the Americans The proposition was that the banks should take a certain number of years in which to market their copper The number of years mentioned occasioned no dispute hat the mines should reduce the prodtic lon of last year which it was deemed was far in excess of the worlds wants A certain cer-tain per cent was to be held by the banks until the metal could be disposed of that there should be a minimum price of about fortyfive pounds per ton an equivalent of 13 cents per pound for lake opper it was agreed upon for the metal toe > to-e sold by the banks and mines This figure was thought to be low enough to meet the consumption and not so low as to ruin the mines After our terms were gone over in a a general way and they seemed to meet the favorable views of the foreign representatives repre-sentatives present they were laid before a awyer representing the bank directors and oreigners interested The representative representa-tive of the Kio Tinto mines I neglected to say was not exactly satisfied with our jroposition He demanded that American mine owners should agree to restrict the export of copper Of course we refused to entertain such ideas We insisted upon equal terms Our terms were as 1 have stated then We do not ask for an immediate reply We were in no hurry and came away without coming to a definite conclusion It would seem from what Haggin has said this noon it was suggested that his wine at least will begin to throw its product on the market for whatever it will I bring UillfTWell the colonel replied We may all have come home prepared to do it but I dont think we will I will not deny that since our return home some modifications have been made in our original proposition and just now a settlement is not a hopeless question During the afternoon Colonel Liyermores rooms at the Brunswick were filled with representatives of the copper dealers and a engthy conference was held at which its i it-s suited several cablegrams which reached New York soon after the Servia left Liver > ool were carefully considered |
