| Show ENGLANDS WAY I The French and Russian ambassadors to Turkey have presented to the Sultan I the formal protests of their respective governments against the ratification of the AngloTurkish convention in regard re-gard to Egypt They have not only done this but they have also charged that the English bribed the Grand Vizier and other officers of the Porte to I enter into the convention The bribery has been emphatically denied as a matter mat-ter of course because there was nothing to it Great Britain does not work diplomatically through bribes England has a way of doing things which excites the astonishment and commands the admiration of the world If she Wants to enter Into a convention or make an arrangement with another government she doesnt go about the world asking other nations if the arrangement would be agreeable to them i she simply does what she wants to and then quietly listens to the squealing on the part of hr envious associates as-sociates England wanted the Island of Cyprus and made it an object for the Porte to relinquish the title though the other powers were wild with rage at the impudence of Victorias government When Great Britain thought it necessary neces-sary a few years ago to assume authority au-thority and control in Egypt it didnt ask France Russia Germany or Italy if its action would be ageeable to them because it knew they would all object but went to Egypt and has since been the virtual ruler in the land of the Pharaohs The present French and Russian protests will amount to nothing nor would the objection ob-jection of the Sultan himself should he present one There is one European government which is absolutely ab-solutely independent of all the others when it wants to be and that is Great Britain If the others dont like what she does they can protest or fight as best pleases them and either course will be satisfactory to the British Peace or war is all the same to them |
