Show THE CHAMBER BUILDING The Recommendations Made by the Committee on Commerce The following report was yesterday submitted to the directors of the Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce HALT LAKE CIItIBBR OF COMMERCE SALT LAKE CITY UTAH April 26 188 j To the President and Board of Directors Salt Lake Cnainber of Commerce Gentlemen Your committee on commerce beg to report that our labors toward securing secur-ing the erection of a government building In this city have met with moe success and encouragement than we had hoped for You have doubtless noticed in tile daily papers that our Representative in Congress and Governor Wtst have strong and reasonable hopes that an ample appropriation will be I made for this purpose all of which has itt i been brought aoout by the combined and tt rb earnest action of our Chamber With the foregoing lUttering prospc in view which of itself is a worthy imtauce of the results of unanimous etlort wo now desira to call your attention to the past action of the Chamber as regards the erection erec-tion of a Chamber of Commerce bulding It appears that a committee was appointed for that purpose who reported bacK to the Chamber quite an exhaustive colle lion of i plans specifications ftc the carrying out of which would necessitate the expenditure I of possibly two millions of dollars The raising of this sum was to be effected by noatingbonds buying up a tea acre block and numerous otber deaN thought by some to be of a speculative and r sky character Without going into further detail it is but necessary to state that their plans did not meet with public confidence or the corn blued support of our Chamber While their eilorts were highly praiseworthy and doubtless emanated from a sincere desire to further public industiy and thrift your committee are of opinion that their plan was far in excess of the needs and necessities of our city and too gigantic to elicit the most essential feature towards its com laiion financial aid It is apparent all that w are today as far from naving a Commerce building as we wee before the subject was agitated Your committee is still of the opinion that nothing will more tend to stimulate our i commerce or inspire toe inauguration of a building boom in our midst than the erection erec-tion of a Ciimmerce building aside from the fact that it can he built upon a feasible selfsustaining basis and we now recommend recom-mend your honorable bony that a 1500 < 3t building will answer all needs and requirements require-ments for a Clamber and we suggest thar another meeting be called in order that the subiec inav be fully discussed from this basis CP MASO RUDOLPH ALFF HENRY SIEGEL J B WALDEtf Committee on Commerce |
