INDIANAPOLIS April 26The Indiana State Democratic convention which assembled as-sembled this morning was largely attended at-tended more than the usual interest being manifested in the outcome of the days work by reason of the bitter feel lag that has been engendered between friends of Governor Gray and of ex v Senator McDonald and which culminated t cul-minated on Wednesday in an address from the latter to his friends throughout through-out the State in which the exbenator says some very uncomplimentary things about tho Governor Another incident that added to the interest was the fact that John Sullivan one of the men indicted in-dicted for participating in tho tally sheet forgeries was a per3istent candidate candi-date for delegate to the St Louis convention con-vention from the Seventh district dis-trict The day s work was simplified sim-plified by the action of various I vari-ous district meetings last night which elected district delegates to the National Convention Presidential electors elec-tors members of committees and assistant as-sistant secretaries and vicepresidents The convention was called to order at oclo3fc The committee on permanent perma-nent organization then reported recommending recom-mending Charles I Jewett for chairman chair-man Daniel W Voorhees David Tur pie John G Shawklin and John H Bass for delegateatlarge to the National Na-tional Convention District delegates are the same as given out last night and after whoh various committees were announced and the report unanimously unani-mously adopted Chairman Jewett 1 then addressed the convention In the coarse of his remarks he paid a glowing tribute to the administration of President Cleveland and when he suggested that the next ticket might be Cleveland and Gray he was greeted with wild cheers and continued applause ap-plause The same was the case when the name of Hendrcks was mentioned Courtland C Matson was nominated for governor The nomination of Matson was made 1 unanimous and William R Myers was nominated for lieutjnantgovernor William H English chairman of the committee on resolutions submitted a platform to tae convention It renews the pledges of fidelity to the Constitution Constitu-tion aud doctrines taught by the founders of the nartV and unnminres n determi nation 0 resist all efforts to deprive the ITederal government of any of its powers delegated in the Constitution The whole country is congratulated upon tile successful administration of Cleveland that he has earnestly labored to discharge the duties of his great offio 2 in the interest of all the people there can be no question that he has succeeded so well is a source of pride and gratification tot to-t OS9 who elected him as it should be to all his countrymen Not even party malice dare to assail his honesty or integrity and all his acts have not only been clean but above suspicion The country is at peace with all the world the laws are faithfully administered good order and economy prevail where ever the executive has control and the whole country is enjoying remarkable prosperity under his wise and beneficent benefi-cent administration Therefore the Democracy of Indiana feel that it would be unwise to risk the hazard of a change and declare themselves emphatically em-phatically in favor of his reelection The tariff plank opposes the hoarding of money in the Treasury beyond the needs of the proper administration of government insists that taxes on imports im-ports be reduced to the lowest point consistent with efficiency in the public service and demands a revision of the tariff as recommended in the Presidents Presi-dents messag The platform furthermore declares that the preference in making appointments appoint-ments to ollice should be given to those who would harmonize in principle and f policy with the party having the responsibility 1 re-sponsibility of the administration that legislation should be enacted to protect the interest of labr and promote harmony har-mony between labor and capital that it is the duty of the government to repossess re-possess itself of all forfeited land grants and that laws should be enacted to prevent pre-vent the ownership of large tracts of land by corporations or aliens that the sale of intoxicants should be regulated by the license system condemns the action of tho Republican party in the last General Assembljras revolutionary declares that the Democratic party favors fair and honest elections favors legislation in behalf of soldiers and concludes with an endorsement of the administration of Governor Gray and instructs tho delegates to the National Na-tional Convention to cast their votes asa as-a unit for him as long as his name is before be-fore tbe Convention as a candidate for the VicePresidency The platform was unanimously adopted Robert Myers was nominated for secretary sec-retary of State for auditor of the S ate Charles A Munson for treasurer the State Thomas B Byrnes John B Wilson was named for at torneygeneral and A F Griffith for superintendent of public instruction after which the convention adjourned |
