Show THE ENGINEERS There is one thing which the Brotherhood Brother-hood of Locomotive Engineers now in annual an-nual session in Denver should do and there is another thing which it should not do The first is the reelection of Chief Airmen a gentleman to whom more than to any other ten men is due the success of the order He is a wise and conscientious man and if his counsels are headed the Brotherhood will ever be prosperous and respectable Once he surrendered his judgment and yielding to the demands of numbers gave his consent to a strike That was in the case of the Burlington road two or three years ago Most bitterly did he repent his course but not more so than did the intelligent thoughtful engineers engaged in the strike and the other engineers of the same class who gave a percentage per-centage of their wages month after month to sustain that most unwise strike When the trouble was ended Mr AUTHUK announced an-nounced that never again would he sanction sanc-tion a strike and because of that determination deter-mination he should be kept where he is The brotherhood should firmly l set its face against an alliance with any other organization organi-zation Now it is free and independent and is perhaps the best managed and most successful of all the labor associations If it unites with the other orders as has been proposed it will not be long before the Engineers will descend from the respectable position which they occupy and being unable to longer manage their own affairs or make terms with their employers without first getting the consent of others will degenerate degene-rate into a ruinous striking machine It is to be hoped that the Brotherhood of Locomotive Loco-motive Engineers will be as wise as it has been and thus retain the enviable place it has so long held in the esteem of the public |
