Show AT THE TABEEN4CIE Elder Sjodahls Sermon on Evidences of the Truth APOSTLE GRANTS SHORT TALK The Principles of the Gospel Enucci sted From the Stand on Sunday At > the opening of the services in the Tabernacle on Sunday afternoon the choir and congregation sang From all that dwell below the skies Let the Creators praise arise Let the Redeemers name be sung Through every land by every tongue Prayer was offered by Elder Henry G Bysvater The choir sang Again we meet around the board Of Jesus our redeeming Lord With faith in his atoning blood Our only access unto God The sacrament was administered by the priesthood of the Twentyfirst Ward ELDER J M SJODAHL who arose to address the congregation desired to call the attention of the audience audi-ence to the existing evidences of revealed re-vealed religion God has given ample evidence of a divine character whereby men can become acquainted with the truth and therefore they cannot beheld be-held guiltless for rejecting the same The speaker pointed out the various kinds of evidences which lead individ uals to a knowledge of the things of God These evidences are of two kinds external and internal Examples of external evidences can be found in the history of the Savior who with the touch of His handcould heal the sick or open the eyes of toe blind These miracles mir-acles gave evidence that He was sent from God In studying the ancient prophecies and comparing them with the events which transpired in later ages there is abundant proof that many of them were literally fulfilled Also in the present age the fulfillment of many of the Old and New Testament prophecies I proph-ecies has come to pass Eder Sjodahl referred to the great power which was to rise up and speak words against the Most High and overcome over-come the Saints These predictions pointed to the apostacy whichsubse quently prevailed on the earth for a season These things plainly declare that those who were made the medium of these prophetic utterances were divinely inspired t It is evident that the Gospel has not come from a human source People must live up to its requirements in order to have a testimony of the same The gospel of Jesus Christ is not in common with human devices It must be cultivated culti-vated m the human heart Men in their ignorance and fanaticism fana-ticism when coming in contact with the humble servants ot God have often threatened them with imprisonment or death if they persisted to act in the name of the Lord But the humble messengers of the gospel have continued nrm auu steadfast in the promu gation of the truth The Latterday Saints pro engaged in a great work and Itions prospect pros-pect is before then Some of thA ancient propheu of God looked forward to this work and joiced in the fact that great and important events were to transpire m the latter times 1 he speaker exhorted the Saints to let their light shine by setting noble examples He particularly urged upon the young to stand up valiantly in the defense or the gospil They should not feel discouraged because the world is arrayed against them The people oi God in ancient times were called a bad people Eyen the Savior was looked upon as a blasphemer and malefactor Evil reports go abroad concerning the Latterday Saint and form a long I evidence that they are engaged in the work of God APOSTLE HEBEB J GRANT having ha-ving been requested to occupy the remaining por tion of the time arose and asked an interest in the faith and prayers of his brethren and sisters Ho desired this blessing that he might be enabled to say something some-thing that might strengthen ther faith and that they might be better fitted to discharge the duties that be before them In exhorting them he was also exhorting himself which is the case with those who speak on the gospel they benefit not only those to whom they speak but also themselves Sacrifice for the truth gives a testimony of the same It was so with the early saints and so it has been made manifest today If men were more true to the gospel and in keeping the commandments command-ments of God their lives would speak louder in tne defense of the truth than they do The speaker expressed his regret that many failed in this respect There are many who stand up and testify tes-tify to the truth Rho do not live as th ought If they lived better liv s they would have greater power with heaven The world may ridicule the Saints and think them deluded That dots not matter They have God on their side Even the Saints areiveak and need God to help them for there are many influences in-fluences that tend to draw them away from the contemplation of spiritual thing There is no labor that will bring the same jog and peace to the human heart as thehonest and faithful observance observ-ance of Gods laws The Lord has promised a testimony only on condition that men will live for it The spirit of God will not dwell in unholy tabernacles The possession of spiritual light and knowledge brings responsibility and the nonperformance of the duties which are made known to us will bring greater condemnation The observance of one or two commandments com-mandments is not alone sufficient Some do not like to hear tithing preached Why Just because they do not obey this law Others are faithful faith-ful in the discharge of this duty and i they can testify that God has abundantly abund-antly blessed them When a man who is indifferent to the truth hearsbis duty preached to him he does not like it Apostle Grant advised the Saints to read and study the Scriptures At the same time he realized that the testimony testi-mony of the still small voice was essential for the true Saint lu closing his remarks Apostle Grant desired that the Saints might be faithful and willing to eodure sufferings suffer-ings in order to do the will of God The choir sang an anthem andthe benediction pronounced by Elder Henry P Richards brought the services serv-ices to a close < |
